In a social media post from @NFLOfficiating, the NFL announced their objective in breaking down walls of diversity and hired its first Black woman to officiate professional football games.
Maia Chaka is the first Black woman to be hired as an NFL official, however, it isn’t her first major role as a referee in high-profile sports. Chaka has worked in the past with the AAF(Alliance Of American Football) as well as the NCAA.
Chaka issued a statement about the historic hiring, saying, “I am honored to be selected as an NFL official. But this moment is bigger than a personal accomplishment. It is an accomplishment for all women, my community, and my culture.”
