Timbaland Reportedly Files to Trademark 'Verzuz TV'

Timbaland has been hard at work recently. Ahead of being honored with the Pioneer Award at Variety’s second annual Miami Entertainment Town event, Timbo spoke with the publication and revealed that he has worked on new albums with Missy Elliott and Justin Timberlake.

Timberlake hasn’t released an album since 2018’s Man of the Woods, but that drought will soon be over with music that Timbaland says mirrors Future Sex/Love Sounds.

“We just finished up and everything sounds great,” Timbaland said. “Now it’s really on him how and when he envisions it to come out, but it’s done and it’s coming.”

He added, “It’s like ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ but nothing too heavy, just giving you what you expect from us.”

Regarding Missy Elliott, Timbaland stated the album is being aimed for a summer release. “We’ve got a lot of songs we’re gonna start recording soon, and my dream is to have it out around her birthday in July. I want it to sound how she looks — she looks incredible right now.”

You can read more details about both albums here.

When the phrase ‘super producer’ is uttered, not many names come to mind. Names like: RZA, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, and Kanye West are among the high ranks that have earned the title. Today however, we celebrate the birth of one who help to shape the scope of both Hip Hop and R&B in the late 90s and early 2000s. Timothy Zachery Mosley a.k.a. Timbaland was born on this day [March 10] 49 years ago.

Timbaland is responsible in large part for the success of artists like Missy Elliot, Aaliyah and Ginuwine. Timbaland helped shape a Hip Hop culture in his home state of Virginia and through his production and organization of local artists. He has even crossed over into pop, working with acts like Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, to create a sound and culture that helped bridge the pop culture gap to allow for more and more trans-genre collaboration.

In honor of Timbaland’s born day, here’s a list of some of his hottest and most influential tracks that have left a permanent mark on Hip Hop and R&B music and culture.

Aaliyah – “One In A Million”

As the third main single of the popular album of the same name, “One in a Million” peaked at #1 on the US Hot Rap/R&B chart. It also claimed the#1 spot in R&B Airplay for six long weeks.

Ginuwine – “Pony”

“Pony” was actually Ginuwine’s debut single and peaked at #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song kept it’s spot on the Hot R&B chart for two weeks.

Missy Elliot – “Supa Dupa Fly”

This was the first single from Missy Elliot’s debut album of the same name. This song hit at #4 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop charts and helped to earn Missy a spot on Elektra Records with her own sub-label Goldmind.

Justin Timberlake – “Sexy Back”

“Sexy Back” is the name of one of Justin Timberlake’s most successful and well known solo records. Hitting the #1 spot in a plethora of countries, this song has gone platinum a few times over in this country and across the globe.

Nelly Furtado – “Promiscuous”

“Promiscuous” is the international #1 hit single of Canadian singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado. Although it has peaked at #1 in a few countries around the globe it hit #3 in the United States. This was the second single from the album Loose.

Grammys 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop Tribute

It’s been a while since Will Smith has been on a stage at an awards show, but allegedly, he was scheduled to make a surprise appearance at the Grammy’s this past Sunday night. However, his comeback performance was derailed due to conflicts with filming Bad Boys 4.

In the weeks leading up to the Grammy’s, host Trevor Noah had hinted that there would be surprise guest appearances, but had kept quiet about specifics. However, Questlove, who produced a 10-minute 50th anniversary of hip-hop tribute performance for the ceremony, let one no-show surprise guest name slip on the red carpet.

Questlove told a Variety reporter that he was going to give the spoiler alert away. “Will Smith was a part of the festivities tonight, but they started shooting Bad Boys 4 this week. There were a lot of preliminary shots that he had to do, so we had to lose Will.”

The show did, however, go on without Smith. Missy Elliott, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, The Roots, Big Boi, Busta Rhymes, GloRilla, Rakim, Ice-T, Lil Baby, GloRilla, Lil Uzi Vert, and more showcased their talents in a commemorative tribute to the genre.

Before the performance, Dr. Dre was honored with the inaugural Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. He spoke about the impact that hip-hop had on him while saying that he was happy to be influencing the next generation of artists. The full performance can be seen below.

Questlove said that pulling off the show took a lot of hard work, telling the New York Times that “it was a lot of mountains to move to make this happen,” noting that Will Smith was not the only celebrity who couldn’t make it. Future and Lil’ Wayne also had toco cancel due to other commitments.

It’s been almost a year since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars in March of 2022.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the 2023 nominees. Included is Hip-Hop royalty in Missy Elliott.

Joining Missy as nominees are A Tribe Called Quest, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Divison/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon.

According to Billboard Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon are first-timers on the ballot. The White Stripes and Missy Elliott arrive as nominees in their first year of eligibility.

Missy Elliott shares, “This is an incredible honor. I’m so humbled and grateful to be counted amongst all the incredible honorees. I’ve spent my career making the kind of music I love and it means so much to know that I have touched others as well. But to hear that I am the first female hip hop artist to EVER be nominated into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame?!? Wow!! This one hits extra different as I hope it opens doors for other female emcees to be recognized!”

Mona Scott-Young, CEO of Monami Entertainment and Elliott’s 25+ year manager added, “Throughout her career, Missy has broken barriers and blazed a trail for women in music. This nomination is the latest in a long list of ‘firsts’ that solidify her place as one of the most significant artists in music history and a pioneer of female Hip Hop. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop than voting Missy Elliott into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!”

CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Greg Harris, spoke with Audacy about this year’s nominees. Speaking on Missy, he stated, “When we were talking about the nomination and Missy Elliott’s name came up, some of the folks in the committee shared that if they’re putting together a hip-hop tribute people will frequently ask, ‘Is Missy gonna be on the show?’ All of the other artists look to her as a leader; she’s an amazing songwriter, amazing performer, she also produces her own stuff. She’s the full package, and it would be fitting if she’s the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”

On this day in 1997, the Norfolk, Virginia-based duo of producing legend Timbaland and rapper Magoo released their first studio album Welcome To Our World. For a debut album, this LP was widely successful, going platinum during the first year of its release. Welcome To Our World also led to the relationship that Timbaland built with DeVante Swing, which jumpstarted his career to superstardom.

This album is a classic among all-rap duos in Hip Hop history. Down in the Seven Cities/Hampton Roads area, Timbaland was already well known as a producer working with artists like Missy Elliot and Ginuwine who are also from Virginia and, at the time, rising star Aaliyah. The release of this particular album only fueled the fire of their local success to set them off toward greater things.

Welcome to Our World was very popular on the HBCU circuit and gave Timbaland and Magoo opportunities to perform at homecomings and other parties on campuses in the Southeast. The promotional success of this album even got it a peaking spot of 33rd on the Billboard 200 in 1997. The album also gave way to three hit singles: “Up Jump da Boogie”, which peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart, “Clock Strikes” featuring VA ghostwriter Madd Skillz, and “Luv 2 Luv Ya”. After this project, Timbaland and Magoo dropped two more successful studio LPs.

Love and Hip Hop's Brittany B Drops Samples Missy Elliott For 'Confidence' Single

Brittany B is definitely in the building! Compton’s class act also referred to as Bee-B, exudes nothing less than strength and innovative creativity in her latest new single, CONFIDENCE.

After the lengthy controversial debate on whether R&B’s Angel Aaliyah’s music will be available to stream on music platforms like Spotify & Apple Music we see that although the creators who owns these works might not have approved of this yet, they have approved of newcomer Bee-B’s single CONFIDENCE.

CONFIDENCE (produced by Harmony “H money “ Samuels and Edgar “JV” Etienne & written by Brittany B., Harmony Samuels, Mellissa “Missy”Elliott, and Timothy “TIMBALAND” Mosley) definitely mirrors Timbaland and Missy’s epic partnership on records. The infectious song gives nostalgic “SHES A B*” vibes with its drum cadence and sounds that are used. But is it a sample?

The correct term is an interpolation and they were able to get Timbaland and Missy’s blessing on this record to pay homage to their iconic sound.
Check out both records below and tell us what you think!

“Confidence is the positive affirmation anthem you didn’t know you needed. Honestly it’s like that record you need to hear every morning to get yourself ready for the day. I wrote it just organically talking to myself and remembering things I would say to my homegirls on the phone. Plus the beat is nostalgic and fun so you can’t help but to dance to it.” says Bee-B.

Missy Elliott Reveals She 'Used To Cry When They Clowned Me'

Missy Elliott is an icon in every sense of the word and if you listen to her music from the 1990s or watch her music videos, then you’ll clearly see that she’s a creative genius that was ahead of her time.

Lil Wayne cited Missy as his influence when creating songs like “Tha Block Is Hot” in a conversation with DJ Khaled.

“That was my favorite rapper… that would be why I was making so many sounds. Missy was into the whole ‘BRRT’ …So when Mannie Fresh would get you in the studio he would remind you, ‘Hey you need to throw the ‘ha ha’ in there. I was like ‘Man he want me to do a sound for every d*** line.’ And so the ‘Block Burner’ song was my favorite song because my favorite artist was Missy Elliott.”

Although she influenced the likes of Weezy, the songwriter hall of famer revealed that she had some emotional moments behind-the-scenes.

“When i 1st came in the game people laughed at me doing sound effects in my music – I used to cry when they clowned me but then I kept doing wild sounds/crazy adlibs in my songs & people began to rock wit it Years later those same sound effects are big in songs today”

Actress Robin Thede saluted Missy’s vulnerability and the rapper/producer added, “I used to cry at the drop of a dime – I will say the Industry will TOUGHEN you up tho! I was DIFFERENT which some may have deemed my sound & style as weird But I remained TRUE to myself as a artist & Thankfully people gave my FUTURISTIC vibe a chance”

On this day in Hip Hop history, rap queen Missy Elliott released her debut LP, Supa Dupa Fly.

Arguably the most influential release by a female rapper in history, this project birthed one of rap’s most important icons, male or female. The Hip Hop/R&B experimental masterpiece not only delivered a fresh sound to a period in between dominant trends, it also set the tone for what would be considered a radio hit at the turn of the millennium.

supadupafly

The sound and success of this project are due in equal part to Missy and fellow Virginian super-producer Timbaland. In the new age, digital R&B style production pioneered a sound that became the standard of any Top 40 crossover hit of the era. His technical ability as a beatmaker personally complimented Missy’s unorthodox, almost broken-up, flow and smooth, soulful vocals. Missy’s ability as an innovative songwriter allowed for the mind-boggling production to not be wasted. The subjects that were touched on came with a new perspective and the way she rode each beat added such emphasis, giving the project a strong theatrical quality.

Commercially, it performed quite well peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album claimed the #1 spot on the R&B/Hip Hop chart and made appearances on music charts in New Zealand and the Netherlands.  The album was certified platinum in the United States and silver in the United Kingdom, both in the year of its release. Critics across the board praised both Timbaland and Missy Elliot for their work on this album, calling it “a key prophecy of the dominant 21st-century Black pop” and “everything the Hip Hop doctor ordered; a woman who could flip between aggression and romance, sex and nonsense, materialism and imagination, without batting one outrageously spidery eyelash.”

Rapper/producer/songwriter Missy Elliott is a legend in the game due to her left of center ideas. She’s never been deterred by people saying her musical inclination as are too weird for the general public. Missy has made long lasting career on taking risks and those gambles have paid off in unimaginable ways.

So for Missy’s 50th birthday, which is July 1st, check out four ways she changed the game.

1. Music Videos
There isn’t an artist in any genre whose debut music video had as much impact as Missy’s “The Rain.” As addicting as the song was, everybody always talked about the heavyset woman with finger waves dancing in a trash bag. The Virginia native was never afraid to throw a million and one out of the box ideas at you in one video. Over the course of her career, Elliott has gone bald, spit in a man’s mouth, hang from a chandelier and eaten a Lamborghini all in the name of music video artistry.

One of her most conceptual visuals, “Get Your Freak On”

2. Lyrics
Before Missy came to prominence, female rappers were either demanding respect or trying their damnedest to focus male attention on their sexuality. The rapper/producer shunned those notions and became a star simply by making a noise on the Gina Thompson “The Things You Do” remix. Her lyrics prove she’s as skilled as, if not better than, any man to touch a mic because as she’s said before, she keeps it realer than the titties on her chest. That’s definitely a rarity in today’s music.

Check out the lyrics to one of her most recent “single to remix” smash hits, “Work It”

3. Image
The Grammy Award winner has kept her individuality in tact by remaining true to self. Instead of trying make herself seem skinnier than she was, Missy used her size as a foundation to build a larger than life character in Hip Hop. You wouldn’t catch her in heels and a dress, but you always knew Missy was probably the most confident when she walked into a room.

missy-e1354183451752

4. Production With Timbaland
The work produced by Missy and Timbaland was groundbreaking because it made us think about and listen to music differently. They incorporated obscure sounds into their songwriting to create a spaced out Hip Hop/R&B sound that still sounds like it came from the future. What would our 90s playlists be without “One In A Million”, “All In My Grill” or the star studded “Hot Boyz (Remix)”? Somewhere hoping an artist like Missy Elliott exists.

Missy Elliott Reveals She 'Used To Cry When They Clowned Me'

Missy Elliott was able to make a North Carolina bride’s dreams come true.

Ireanna Bradshaw took to Twitter to tell her story about her plans to move and get married, but not being able to afford her dream dress. “Im getting Married in March &trying to move into our own place. Excited but overwhelmed,” she tweeted. “I have been saving money; but its still a struggle. I found my dream dress and I want to get it so bad but between saving for the move- i dnt think it will be possible…..”

Bradshaw explained why this moment was so sentimental for her. “I never thought Id find a love like this and never thought someone would want to marry me. With all my previous insecurities- i didnt think i was worthy of love,” she wrote. “Loving myself made me ready for love. I would be so grateful to have some support: anything would help.”

She uploaded a screenshot of the $1,299 dress.

Ireanna probably never imagined that Missy would see her tweet. “Early Congratulations,” Elliott tweeted. “May God Bless you both with an Unbreakable Union and full of Love & Happiness.”

The stunned bride tried to have the wedding of the year and extended an invitation to Missy.

Although the Virginia native didn’t confirm her attendance, she did something that’s even better. “Your Dress is paid for now,” Missy Elliott tweeted back. “I don’t know you but I saw you said the dress of your dreams & figured I would help when I saw you post ya cash app.”

“May Blessings pour on your Beautiful Wedding Day,” she added.

On this day in Hip Hop history, rap queen Missy Elliott released her debut LP, Supa Dupa Fly.

Arguably the most influential release by a female rapper in history, this project birthed one of rap’s most important icons, male or female. The Hip Hop/R&B experimental masterpiece not only delivered a fresh sound to a period in between dominant trends, it also set the tone for what would be considered a radio hit at the turn of the millennium.

supadupafly

The sound and success of this project is due in equal part to Missy and fellow Virginian super-producer Timblaland. The new age, digital R&B style production pioneered a sound that became the standard of any Top 40 crossover hit of the era. His technical ability as a beat maker personally complimented Missy’s unorthodox, almost broken-up, flow and smooth, soulful vocals. Missy’s ability as an innovative song writer allowed for the mind boggling production to not be wasted. The subjects that were touched on came with new perspective and the way she rode each beat added such emphasis, giving the project a strong theatrical quality.

Critics across the board praised both Timbaland and Missy Elliot for their work on this album, calling it “a key prophecy of the dominant 21st century Black pop” and “everything the Hip Hop doctor ordered; a woman who could flip between aggression and romance, sex and nonsense, materialism and imagination, without batting one outrageously spidery eyelash.”

On this day in 1997, the Norfolk, Virginia based duo of producing legend Timbaland and rapper Magoo released their first studio album Welcome To Our World.

The picture proves that the “Lose It” superstar has not aged one bit. Supa Dupa Fly was released on July 15th, 1997. Produced by Timbaland, the album features most of Missy’s most memorable songs like “Sock It 2 Me,” “The Rain,” “Beep Me 911,” and “Best Friends,” featuring the late Aaliyah Haughton. In the first week of the album’s release, Supa Dupa Fly sold 129,000 copies and charted at number three on the US Billboard 200.

She has recently released her new EP titled, Iconology, releasing a visual to her single, “DripDemeanor” ft. Sum1.

Amazon Music has teamed with Missy Elliott for a new interview to highlight their Rap Rotation and R&B rotation playlists.

In the discussion of the release of her new album Iconology, Missy discussed topics including the making of her new album, the new women in Hip-Hop and the return of Timbaland to her career.

“Timbaland is on ‘Drip Demeanor’ and it’s so amazing just watching him because he truly is a genius. And his cadence, his drum pattern is like no other… When I play something,” Missy said. “He’ll most definitely be like ‘no, you should do it like this’ and that’s always been us. And he’ll play something and he’ll go through sounds and I’ll be like ‘oh that’s crazy’ or I’ll be like ‘that’s super wack.’ And vice versa. And you know I think we trust each other because we’ve been knowing each other since high school.”

The work of the two Hip-Hop icons goes back all the way to the “Work It” single, which Timbo met Missy with a challenge in creating the single.

“For ‘Work It’ I’ll never forget. I went in and I was so happy about my first verse and he was like ‘that’s wack.’ So then I went in the second and he was like ‘I mean… it’s aight.’ So by the fifth time, it’s the verse that y’all hear. And he was like ‘that’s what I’m talking about!’ And I have been like that with records with him too, so we’re always constantly pushing each other.”

You can see the full interview below and be sure to check out Iconology when it drops.

Missy Elliott finally got her things. One of the Hip-Hop GOATs returned to the MTV VMAs stage and received the 2019 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for her stellar visuals throughout her careers.

Before accepting the award from an extremely excited Cardi B, Missy hit the stage for an amazing medley of her singles. Misdemeanor started with her new release “Throw It Back” before rolling into a collection of “Get Ur Freak On,” “Pass That Dutch,” “Lose Control,” and plenty more.

In a moment that had 2000s twitter buzzing, Missy brought Alyson Stoner out to complete the “Work It” portion of the performance.

“Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” Bruce Gillmer, the co-brand head of MTV International, said in a statement. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

“This Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award means so much to me,” Elliott said during her acceptance. “I have worked diligently for over two decades, and I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award, so it means so much to me. I promise you, it don’t go unnoticed, that the support and love that y’all have shown me over the years.”

As any music legend with an eclectic eye for artistry deserves, Missy Misdemeanor Elliott will finally be receiving the coveted “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” at tonight’s 2019 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony!

After over 20 years in the game, Missy has built up a catalogue of music videos that is without question deserving of the accolade. Actually, MTV went an extra mile in presenting the “Sock It 2 Me” superstar with this prestigious honor by partnering with Pepsi this past weekend to debut a full interactive exhibition in New York City that paid homage to some of Missy’s most iconic music videos.

From the aforementioned Supa Dupa Fly hit single and its predecessor “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” to the unforgettable sand dunes scene in “Lose Control” and the nail salon moment in “Work It” — this booth even offered all the ‘fly gals’ a chance to get their nails done! — the entire “Museum of Missy” pop-up experience made you appreciate just how much work she put into these iconic visuals over the years. Each activation included information on the video’s director and stylist, which for most part was handled by Hype Williams and June Ambrose, respectively, and the complimentary cocktails were also themed around Missy’s biggest hits.

The pop-up was a limited time experience that concluded yesterday unfortunately, but those who could attend could probably all agree that it’s about time an icon like Missy Elliott receive all the love she can get from the industry and fans alike. With the debut of her new EP Iconology late last week, let’s hope that the world gets 20 more years of astounding music videos from the bombastically dope rap Queen. Thankfully, we’re already to a good start with “Throw It Back.”

Take a look at more pics from the “Museum of Missy” below, and make sure to catch her live at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards tonight at 8:00 PM EDT as she receives the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award”:

aaliyah best hip hop collaborations th anniversary death august

August 25 will never be an easy day for many music fans across the world, particularly for those who love the late R&B icon Aaliyah Dana Haughton.

Since 2001, this day has marked the anniversary since our beloved Princess of R&B and Queen of Urban Pop was killed in a plane crash after filming the music video for “Rock the Boat” off her perfect self-titled album, Aaliyah. The serenity of the beat paired with her light-as-a-feather vocals, even with its suggestively coy lyrics, have stood the test of time as one of the most beautiful R&B videos of all time, while also being one of the most heartbreaking as well.

Granted, she was a beast on the soul tip, but Baby Girl was also one of the premiere R&B divas who had no problem riding a Hip-Hop beat with syncopated bliss. Much like her ’90s predecessors Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, Aaliyah brought out the softer side of the street and could hold her own next to some of the hardest rappers during her era of reign. So, while we’ll always remember her for being a soul siren with the voice of an angel, The Source decided to take the 18th anniversary of Aaliyah’s untimely passing to give you all 25 of her illest rap collabs and remixes.

From making sure DMX made it back in one piece, to getting a fresh-out-of-jail Slick Rick on a Marvin Gaye cover, let’s look back at Aaliyah as a Hip-Hop star:

Hot like fire: Aaliyah (circa 1997) recording the “Night Riders” remix with Boot Camp Clik members Tek & Steele of Smif-N-Wessun and Buckshot.

25. “If Your Girl Only Knew” (The New Remix) [featuring Missy Elliott]

A good argument for why it made perfect sense in the ’90s to buy both the album and single releases. This ‘Missy mix’ of Aaliyah’s chart-topping 1996 hit record absolutely slaps.

24. “At Your Best (You Are Love)” (Stepper’s Ball Remix) [featuring R. Kelly]

It’s a bit tough to get through the Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number era without mentioning R. Kelly, given all that’s come to light this year, but it just doesn’t make sense to ignore Aaliyah’s musical legacy from her beginning years in order to #MuteRKelly. Some songs, like this deep cut remix, prove that she’s so much greater than the producer behind and on the record.

23. “Man Undercover” – Timbaland and Magoo (featuring Aaliyah)

Silky and smooth vocals from the queen, paired with a few bars by Timbo to give the hard-hitting beat a proper rap component. This was always a sweet spot for the “Timbaliyah” duo.

22. “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” (Linslee Remix) [featuring Cash Rex]

Here’s a G-funk remix by British producer Linslee Campbell that most fans have probably never even heard. Yeah, you’re welcome!

21. “Enough Said” (featuring Drake)

Yep, we took it there! As the sole posthumously-released collaboration on this list, we had to show “Enough Said” and Drizzy some love for keeping Baby Girl’s legacy alive over a decade after her death.

20. “John Blaze” (featuring Missy Elliott)

When Missy and Aaliyah jumped on a track together, it always resulted in a smooth banger. This cut off Timbaland’s 1998 album Tim’s Bio: Life from da Bassment proved to be no different.

19. “Girlfriends” – Yaushameen Michael (featuring Aaliyah)

This unreleased collab has reached almost mythical status. Even though most people have no idea who Yaushameen Michael is — she was a minor member of the Bassment Crew that even landed a feature on Tim’s Bio: Life from da Bassment (1998) — it didn’t stop Aaliyah from getting on a record with the unsung femcee. “Girlfriends” was originally recorded for Aaliyah’s 2001 self-titled album as a way for her to officially introduce the world to Yaushameen. Due to many circumstances, the ultimate one being Aaliyah’s passing, this collab never saw the light of day until it leaked back in 2006.

18. “Back and Forth” (featuring R. Kelly)

Nothing beats the first time! On her debut single, which topped the R&B chart and peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, Aaliyah proved from the beginning that she was a b-girl at heart.

17. “Are You Feelin’ Me” (featuring Timbaland)

One of the hardest tracks off the Romeo Must Die soundtrack, “Are You Feelin’ Me” is still a peak Aaliyah/Timbaland era beat. This one just further solidifies the void in pop music we’ve been feeling for the past 18 years that only these two could fill.

16. “I Need You Tonight” – Junior M.A.F.I.A. (featuring Aaliyah)

Young Liyah with a baby-faced Kim and the Junior M.A.F.I.A. crew, who were also more than likely teenagers at the time. Young Nation, indeed!

15. “Hot Like Fire” (Feel My Horns Mix) [featuring Timbaland & Missy Elliott]

Aaliyah, Missy and Timbaland. Need we say more? Definitely blast this one at high volume!

14. “Try Again” (Timbaland Remix) [featuring Sabastian And Sin]

Even though Aaliyah’s vocals are carried over from the original Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song, and the bars by Sabastian And Sin are a bit forgettable, Timbaland’s added extensions to the beat toward the beginning and end make up for the lyrical shortcomings.

13. “Down With The Clique” (featuring Tia “Second Chapter” Hawkins)

While the circumstances behind Tia Hawkins’ story are heartbreaking in itself to say the least, reflecting back on the good times will always soften the blow of hard times and tribulations. Her work as a rapper on “Down With The Clique,” in addition to many other songs on the Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number album, make for worthy recognition in a positive light. Wherever you are, we’re praying for you Tia!

12. “Ladies In Da House” (featuring Missy Elliott & Timbaland)

One of the chillest deep cuts off Aaliyah’s classic 1996 album One In a Million. Definitely something that both the ladies and fellas in the house can always groove to.

11. “Queen Bitch” – Lil’ Kim (featuring Aaliyah & The Notorious B.I.G.)

Even though Aaliyah and Biggie make light contributions to this Hard Core standout, it’s still dope to think that Kim had two music icons on a radio remix for the streets. Respect to the Queen!

10. “A Girl Like You” (featuring Treach)

The back-and-forth flow between these two made for a super fun record overall. Also, the fact that fellow Naughty By Nature member Kay-Gee produced this One In a Million album cut is an added bonus.

9. “Live and Die for Hip Hop” – Kris Kross (featuring Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Mr. Black, and Aaliyah)

Aaliyah is so silky on this record, even though she’s simply cooing on the chorus. This record will always make us wonder how she would’ve fit into the So So Def family if things had played out differently.

8. “We Need a Resolution” (featuring Timbaland)

Looking back, this song was the literal example of the term “ahead of its time.” It barely made a blip on the Hot 100 back in 2001 — it peaked at no. 59 — but “We Need a Resolution” would’ve been a surefire hit had it been released in today’s more experimental musical climate.

7. “Got To Give It Up” (featuring Slick Rick)

What’s interesting about this collaboration is that Slick Rick recorded this while on work release from prison, in addition to Aaliyah being brave enough to cover a ’70s soul classic with satisfying results. Now that’s gangsta!

6. “Stickin’ Chickens” – Missy Elliott (featuring Aaliyah and Da Brat)

The ultimate female empowerment record, done effortlessly by three Hip-Hop queens of the ’90s. There’s nothing better than hearing the union between women who rock with each other both on and off wax.

5. “Up Jumps da Boogie” – Timbaland & Magoo (featuring Missy Elliott and Aaliyah)

What a tune! As posse records go, this was an apex moment for the Bassment Crew. Everyone played their part perfectly, and the music video is still a great look at one of the best musical families to ever do it.

4. “Night Riders (9th Wonder Remix)” – Boot Camp Clik (featuring Aaliyah)

While Buckshot & Boogie Brown’s original remix for Boot Camp Clik’s 1997 album For the People was fire in itself, 9th Wonder absolutely laced this version. Aaliyah of course is as smooth as ever, proving yet again that she can hold her own with the hardest MCs.

3. “You Won’t See Me Tonight”- Nas (featuring Aaliyah)

We still can’t believe this song didn’t get an official release with a proper music video! The God Nasir and the Queen Aaliyah make for a dream team on this I Am… standout cut, produced by none other than Timbo the King.

2. “Come Back In One Piece” (featuring DMX)

When considering joint albums by the likes of Jhené Aiko and Big Sean (Twenty88), or a more accurate comparison like The Carters themselves Jay-Z and Beyoncé, DMX and Aaliyah would’ve made a pretty solid collaborative LP had fate given us more time with Baby Girl. Given this classic cut off the soundtrack for Romeo Must Die, the 2000 film which stars both musicians, we can only assume that it would’ve been a definite hit.

1. “Are You That Somebody?” (Supafriendz Remix) [featuring Danja Mowf, Mad Skillz & Lonnie B.]

One of Aaliyah’s greatest rap moments ever was this massive remix to her even more massive 1998 hit record off the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack. The streets couldn’t get enough of this version, and Timbaland’s insanely iconic beat didn’t even need to be touched. Simply put, there will never be a singer that meshes so well with Hip-Hop quite like this dearly missed R&B queen.

Rest in peace forever, Aaliyah! Let us know how you’re remembering the dearly missed R&B icon today by letting us know over on our Facebook and Twitter!

Lizzo has been receiving tons of critical acclaim for her major label debut album Cuz I Love You that dropped back in April. One of the standout tracks is a high-energy cut called “Tempo” that features her idol Missy Elliott, and now the fun has extended into a new music video that’s truly a sight to see.

It’s hard to even pinpoint a highlight in the almost three-minute clip because, well, the video itself is one big highlight from start to finish. Lizzo is a vision as she twerks with her “thicc” and beautiful backup dancers, meanwhile Missy brings back those quirky-cool visual effects from her “Work It” days as she hops out a lowrider and keeps it fresh in a tracksuit and kicks. Heck, Lizzo even gets to flex her flute skills at the end that solidifies her as the next big quadruple threat. From the fashion (two-pieces and thongs galore!) to the impressive bars by both femcees alike, this is definitely one video that will have you entertained the whole way through.

Watch the new music video for “Tempo” by Lizzo and Missy Elliott above, and listen to ‘Cuz I Love You‘ now on all streaming platforms if you haven’t already.

missy elliott confirms new album marie claire cover story

Recognized for her legendary career as an award-winning rapper and Hall of Fame-inducted writer, Missy Elliott is finally giving us what we’ve been waiting for since 2005: a new album! Thankfully we know for sure that it’s officially happening thanks to her latest cover story for the new issue of Marie Claire.

Yes, believe it or not, it’s been 14 years since Melissa Arnette “The G.O.A.T.” Elliott dropped her last full EP, The Cookbook. The time was filled with a few hit singles, including “Ching-a-Ling” and “Shake Your Pom Pom” in 2008, “WTF (Where They From)” in 2015 and just two years ago with “I’m Better” in 2017. Following her induction last month into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, this news comes as even more of a reason to appreciate one of the pioneer female MCs in the game.

For this album, she tells Marie Claire that it’s time to make street dudes enjoy dancing again, even using references to days of Soul Train. If we know Missy, that could even be a clue to her eclectic creative direction for the album’s rollout. Only a few words though from the Queen herself in reference to what she wants fans to say after giving the record a full spin: “There’s no one like Missy. No one.” Never was a question!

Read the full cover story over on Marie Claire. Fingers crossed we’ll see a release date for the new album this year!

madonna greatest hip hop rap moments

With almost four decades down as the inarguable and undisputed Queen of Pop, Madonna is still at the top of her game — her latest album, Madame X, recently became her ninth LP to go No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Throughout the theatrics of her longstanding career, amidst the many controversial moments and beyond the fact that, aside from Janet Jackson, she’s the literal prototype for every single one of your current favorite pop singers, Madonna has managed to stay grounded and, quite frankly, always keep it cool. Part of that could possibly be credited to her appreciation for Hip-Hop culture.

While Madame X showcases a more Latin pop-influenced side of Madge, it still doesn’t come without a rap collab or two. A standout from the new album even sees her reuniting with Migos member Quavo on a song called “Future” — you may remember she was featured on his debut solo LP Quavo Huncho last year alongside Cardi B on the album cut “Champagne Rosé.” However, Madonna’s rap cred extends way beyond just jumping on the current wave of trap. Allow us school you all real quick.

Take a look at 10 times Madonna proved she holds a special place in the realm of rap, and how Hip-Hop has shown an equal appreciation for the reigning Queen of Pop:

Mark Goodman and Dave Murphy Bring the Bars to ‘Erotica‘ on “Did You Do It?” (1992)

What started out as a playful rap while mixing the Erotica album cut “Waiting” ended up being a sexually-charged reprise of the song that made it on the actual album. Whether or not they “did it” in real-life is still something fans ponder over to this day.

Embracing the New Jack Swing Era For Her ‘Bedtime Stories‘ Album (1994)

The Bedtime Stories album showed Madonna diving into a more soulful sound — she might even be the first artist to sample Aaliyah, too! — and it was all thanks to production provided by Babyface, Dallas Austin and Dave “Jam” Hall. The latter blessed her with the beat for “Human Nature,” which famously incorporates a sample of Main Source’s hit 1994 rap single “What You Need.”

Making Love (and Music) With Tupac (1994 – 1995)

The union between these two music icons was a well-known rumor that went on for ages, which Madonna officially confirmed a few years ago during an interview on Howard Stern. What many may not know though is that Pac was supposed to be on the aforementioned Bedtime Stories album, but was pulled off at the last minute more than likely due to to his legal troubles. Take a listen to what could’ve been below:

Linking Up With Missy Elliott for Gap’s ‘New Groove’ Campaign (Summer 2003)

Not only does “Madonna & Missy” have a nice ring of alliteration to it, but the two actually made for the perfect pair to promote a perfect pair of jeans. The jingle is pretty catchy, too.

Jay-Z Sampling “Justify My Love” on ‘The Black Album‘ (Fall 2003)

Even though this is more of an interpolation than an actual feature, the idea of the King of Hip-Hop and the Queen of Pop sharing any form of musical space is a pretty cool concept. Like everything that Hov touches, this DJ Quik-produced track turned out dope.

Collaborating with Timbaland, The Neptunes, Kanye West and Danja for ‘Hard Candy‘ (2008)

With Pharrell, Kanye West and Timbaland on your album — mind you, this was the peak era of production for all three guys! — the result was going to be nothing short of epic. The worldwide success of “4 Minutes” proved that without a question.

Getting a Lil Wayne Feature on Her Greatest Hits Album ‘Celebration‘ (2009)

Madonna has been running things for so long that one greatest hits album just wasn’t enough. For the third one, Weezy joined in on the celebration to deliver his classic witty flow and bars that could fit on even the most pop-tinged of songs. If only they made a music video for this one.

Bringing Out Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. for the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show (2012)

“Give Me All Your Luvin'” was the lead single off Madonna’s MDNA album, and ending up being one of two songs on the LP to include a feature from Nicki Minaj. The Madonna/Minaj saga would go on to continue on her next album, Rebel Heart, with the Diplo-produced “Bitch I’m Madonna.” Just imagine what a whole collab album would sound like!

Collaborating with Nas For a Career Retrospect on the ‘Rebel Heart‘ Bonus Track “Veni Vidi Vici” (2015)

As both artists are considered legends in their respective genres, this was a monumental moment for music. The song plays out with both taking an Illmatic-style trip down memory lane to showcase where they’ve been and everything they still plan to accomplish in their careers. A perfect collab, indeed.

Recruiting Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd For “Crave” (2019)

On Madame X, we see Madonna continuing to show her respect to rap — Mike Dean is recruited on the production side of seven songs, including one deluxe edition track alongside Pharrell again. One of the standout’s from Dean’s production side is the track with Swae Lee, which even has an eye-grabbing music video to go with it. Hopefully this rap relationship continues for another 14 albums!

Listen to ‘Madame X,’ the new album by Madonna, right now on all streaming platforms. Who could you see the pop queen collaborating with in Hip-Hop next? Let us know over on Facebook and Twitter!

Missy Elliott made history over the weekend becoming the first Hip-Hop artist to receive an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music, the nation’s elite music conservatory.

During her acceptance speech, the pioneering producer, songwriter, singer, and rapper spoke overcoming the odds while navigating her way through the music industry. She left the students with a hopeful message. “There will be ups and downs — prepare for that, but don’t give up,” she said. “As long as you are breathing, it is never too late. Don’t forget that. You have come too far to quit.”

While honoring Missy Elliott, who is expected to release her first album in over a decade, the prestigious school praised the five-time Grammy Award winner for “bending genres, breaking stereotypes, and pushing musical, visual, and stylistic boundaries.”

Justin Timberlake was also a recipient of the honor and had some inspiring words. “I hope that in the years to come, two things will happen: One, I will represent you in the way that you most hope for. And two, I look around and see this graduating class. Meet me at the studio. I want to see y’all!’

Its been thirteen years since her last album, but it seems that Missy Elliott is preparing to end her (relative) musical drought. The rap legend affirmed that she’s chipping away at another LP, which will stamp her first since 2005’s, The Cookbook.

Reacting to a Recording Academy tweet setting that she’d affirmed another collection, Missy said, “You can expect nothing but records and people going back to dancing nonstop! All Facts! Thank you @RecordingAcademy love yall❤.”

Although Missy didn’t officially announce a forthcoming album, she has been teasing new sounds on social media. This, and previous tweets about the matter demonstrates uplifting news for diehard Missy fans.

A great deal has changed since Missy Misdemeanor dropped off her last solo group of work, which incorporates features from the likes of Mike Jones, M.I.A, Ciara, Slick Rick, Fatman Scoop and more. In that time, trap, Auto-Tune-bound songs and the lo-fi style of South Florida’s rap scene have turned into the most predominant sounds in the Hip Hop genre. The state of the music business has changed a considerable measure, as well. Missy’s last LP dropped three years before Spotify even launched.

Those previously mentioned changes to the Hip Hop scene aren’t lost on Missy, who reviewed the manner in which change made her reluctant to drop another task.

In a tweet dated Oct. 1, Missy expressed, “For so long I was hesitant to put out music in fear no 1 would get it because people said music has changed & my sound been so different but NOW IM LIKE hey‍♀ bump it make music that feels good to me let me Get y’all asses dancing again.”

After five days, on Oct. 6, Missy tweeted a message that indicated that she’s planning to release new music. She wrote, “[In] 2019Let me get yall asses DANCING AGAIN”Cool Off.”

“Cool Off” appears to be the name of a new song she’s working on. She provides a sample of the hyperactive new tune in the same tweet.

The 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, held at Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall on Aug. 30, respected Janet Jackson with the BMI Icon Award and featured an unexpected appearance by Missy Elliott. The occasion perceives the songwriters, producers, and publishers of the year’s most-performed R&B/Hip Hop melodies.

Metro Boomin was named Producer of Year for the third consecutive year. He likewise brought home Songwriter of the Year for his work on “Bad and Boujee,” “Bank Account” and “Mask Off.” Song of the Year went to The Weeknd’s “I Feel It Coming,” composed by Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk. General Music Publishing Group (UMPG) was granted Publisher of the Year for the fourth year in a row. UMPG had 15 of the most performed songs of the year.

Moreover, the occasion honored the late Aretha Franklin, who, the performance rights association noted, “Was part of the BMI family for 50 years.” Tamela Mann sang “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” followed by “You’ve Got a Friend” in honor of the Queen of Soul.

Different entertainers included Atlanta rapper Derez De’shon (the 2018 BMI Social Star), H.E.R., and the 411 Dance Troupe. Songs by Janet Jackson were performed by Jussie Smollett (“That’s the Way Love Goes”), Justine Skye (“Let’s Wait Awhile”), Normani (“The Pleasure Principle”) and Teyana Taylor (“I Get Lonely”).

Missy Elliott later delivered a speech about the iconic singer.

The occasion was facilitated by Mike O’Neill, BMI President, and CEO, and Catherine Brewton, VP of Creative, Atlanta, alongside way of life identity Kenny Burns.

Today marks 45 years since the birth of Hip-Hop!

In the decades since it all began on Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, the genre has went on to become the most powerful (and most lucrative!) in all of music. Of course, that feat is heavily due to the many rap pioneers who started it all those years ago, upheld it decade after decade, and continue to keep it going strong today through the current digital era.

We came together and picked 15 of the most memorable debut albums in rap for the 45th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

Let’s start from the beginning:

The Sugarhill Gang, Sugarhill Gang (Feb, 1980)

The Sugarhill Gang carved their legend as the hip-hop group credited with putting out the first successful rap record, “Rapper’s Delight,” in September 1979. The album followed soon after in February 1980, and helped spearhead the beginning of something great. While you probably could find a record that pre-dates this one with rapping on it, Sugarhill Gang brought the bars to the masses and solidified the power of the mic. No wonder why we chose a microphone as our official stamp of approval for the flyest records only.

Kurtis Blow, Kurtis Blow (Sept, 1980)

As the first rapper to sign with a major label, Kurtis Blow definitely paved the way for what’s now called “bidding wars” between labels wanting to sign the next big rap star. Spearheaded by his hit single “The Breaks,” Blow’s self-titled debut cemented his role as a rap pioneer that he began to carve out a year earlier with the 1979 single release of  “Christmas Rappin’.” We might be reaching, but he even created a lane for the rap-singers dominating the charts today with his cover of “Takin’ Care of Business.”

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Message (Oct, 1982)

Grandmaster Flash was and still is one of the most recognized names in the rap and DJ community. With the Furious Five by his side, including member Keef Cowboy who created the term “hip-hop,” Flash established the foundations of rap culture though innovative DJing, cutting, scratching and mixing. Their groundbreaking single “The Message” showed us how powerful these words on wax could be when the right person gets behind the mic. Grandmaster Flash was one of the firsts, and thankfully wouldn’t be the last.

Public Enemy, Yo! Bum Rush The Show (Feb, 1987)

We don’t know what’s more iconic about Public Enemy’s first album: the music or the rifle target logo that has literally become a movement on its own! With Yo! Bum Rush The Show, the group empowered a worldwide audience with their hit single “Rightstarter (Message to a Black Man)” and the first and namesake single “Public Enemy No. 1.” In short, this album gave birth to a new era of hard-hitting Hip-Hop.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper (Mar, 1988)

Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff were the first real duo in rap to show that two can sometimes be better than one. Before Mobb Deep, Outkast, Clipse, and way before Rae Sremmurd, Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince pioneered the double take movement with He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper — the first double-disc release in Hip-Hop history. Although it wasn’t their first, this album expanded the imagination of rap by bringing it all the way to TV with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the classic sitcom that both rapper’s starred on. With a primetime audience on their side, it was no surprise the second single off the LP, “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” took home the very first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance.

NWA, Straight Outta Compton (Aug, 1988)

If you ever wondered where the gangsta in rap came from, give all thanks to NWA.  This groundbreaking album brought a cultural commentary that ended up changing rap forever. Dr. Dre, Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Ice Cube, MC Ren and the dearly missed Eazy-E topped the charts together by turning their life experiences into art, providing a ground for Hip-Hop’s growth into a platform for protest. They marketed themselves as journalists basically,  reporting on the effects of poverty and gang violence, and put profanity in their lyrics to make fans listening from the outside-looking-in repeat it in ethical terms. The group had a dangerous exterior, but had a message to prove by offending the right people.

Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle (Nov, 1993)

You are looking at one of the most successful albums in the game. Doggystyle held the original title of fastest-selling Hip-Hop album with its record-breaking 806K first week sales, spearheading it into a status as one of the most pivotal albums at a time where the West Coast was really starting to shine. Uncle Snoop, we salute you fam!

Nas, Illmatic (Apr, 1994)

Nas’ debut magnum opus wasn’t even a best-seller at the time it originally released, but the influence it’s had on the game as a whole is one that can’t be denied. We were happy to help spearhead this record to greatness with The Source‘s  classic 5-mic review given to Illmatic back in 1994, and our feelings about it haven’t changed one bit. The Queens-bred king will always reign supreme.

Missy Elliott, Supa Dupa Fly (Jul, 1997)

Representing for the ladies on the mic, Missy released one of the greatest musical albums of all time. Supa Dupa Fly was an electrifying album that was feminist, innovative and inspirational all at the same time. Missy also helped curate the era of visuals, where each of her music videos brought us a cinematic appeal that was purely eclectic and innovative. Missy provides a cocky-yet-sweet approach on this record that was just powerful to witness.

50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (Feb, 2003)

Call him a troll if you want, but 50 Cent took over the rap game in 2003 with the release of his debut album. Backed by Eminem’s Shady Records, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ brought back the era of street rap that went by the wayside for a bit during the Bad Boy “Shiny Suit” era.  His blowout hit “In Da Club” earned the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and saw platinum success tenfold. Looking back, 50 proved to be the underdog in the game that made it to the top with plenty of hits to count for. Thankfully he got rich, because our daily Instagram feeds would be lacking if the other option came to fruition.

Kanye West, The College Dropout (Feb, 2004)

Regardless of how you feel about him now, Kanye West really did release a modern-day rap classic with his 2004 debut album. College Dropout was talking about real life problems, particularly when it came to the first single “Through The Wire,” where each verse was spit through a literal wired-shut mouth. Kanye fought hard for the recognition and remaining respect he gets today, and his beginnings here remind us that, behind the current madness, there’s still a genius in there.

Kid Cudi, Man on the Moon: The End of Day (Sept, 2009)

Anyone currently get lit to Travis Scott’s Astroworld, or any of the many emo-rap stars, honestly owes a big chunk of homage to Mr. Mescudi. The sonics, the visuals, just the overall Kid Cudi swag was enough to influence the last leg of the generation to shift the sound of Hip-Hop even further to the left. Man on the Moon: The End of Day is a classic slow burner, but in the best way possible.

Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city (Oct, 2012)

Kendrick Lamar’s storytelling behind this album is remarkable. He introduced us into his own Cali underworld, filled with new emcees that added a new spin on the “G-Funk bounce” that put the region on the map. This album brings to mind a short film, with powerful stories about gang violence, love, and his teenage years of being on the streets. Even now good kid, m.A.A.d city is on the charts after 300 weeks, proving once again just how wrong the Grammys got it that year. DAMN!

Chance The Rapper, Coloring Book (2016)

Technically, Chance The Rapper doesn’t even have a debut album; all of his projects to date have been  labeled as mixtapes. However, the game-changing free album Coloring Book put streaming platforms on entirely when it became the first streaming-album to be on the top charts with over 53 million streams. Add to the fact that it’s the first streaming-only album ever to win a Grammy,Coloring Book proved that Hip-Hop could not only survive in the digital era, but that it would also dominate. To this day, Coloring Book is still considered to be one of the most popular and fulfilling albums — err, mixtapes! — ever made.

Cardi B, Invasion of Privacy (2018)

The era of Cardi B — yeah, we’re calling it just that! — has been one of the most entertaining, ascending whirlwind careers to watch.  Kicked off by her five-time platinum single “Bodak Yellow” last year in April, Cardi couldn’t get people to stop anticipating and talking about her debut album. Once Invasion of Privacy finally did arrive, it was already certified gold with 500,000 copies and counting off the singles itself. Two months later, it got platinum certification by the RIAA. The “Be Careful” rapper has been setting records left and right, and who knows what she has up her sleeves next.

Who’d we miss? Sound off on your favorite debut Hip-Hop records by letting us know over on Facebook and Twitter!

Happy birthday, Hip-Hop!  Forever love…

Pharrell has progressively stepped up his philanthropic efforts as his celebrity looms larger and larger. His most recent project is the Yellow Ball, a function going down on September 10 at the Brooklyn Museum. The occasion is intended to profit the Young Audiences Arts for Learning, an organization that advocates for the arts to be taught in school. He announced the gala today via Billboard.

The night will also feature a number of performances, including fellow Virginia legend, Missy Elliott.  Art and fine dining will also be apart of the experience.

Pharrell shared his inspiration for the event in a recent interview. “Workmanship is to a great extent reducing all through the educational modules all through this nation, and we have to secure the innovative personality,” he said. “Everything around you right now as opposed to all that you’re utilizing, it’s simply not natural, it was somebody’s epiphany. That is imagination, that should be secured. In the event that we don’t have that, I don’t recognize what sort of future we have. We need to secure the craftsman network no matter what, over every single masterful teach.”

The super producer also embraced the new generation of artists and shared what he loves the most. “I love what they do and how they express themselves. It’s like these amazing pockets of lyrics or melodies that feel good to them,” he explained. “The music just takes on a direction of its own, it’s not so formatted. I love that this generation is just grabbing the instruments and using them in whatever way feels good to them. That’s just like a sign of how the times have changed.”

Pharrell has his hands in many pots these days, including fashion and footwear. His Adidas NMD Hu Solar Pack will drop soon; also he previewed an unreleased shoe with Three Stripes. This all comes in the wake of releasing an N.E.R.D. rendition of the Adidas NMD Hu in June. He also has triplets. What a busy man.

Ciara has the world wanting the yummy, as the “Level Up” challenge has literally swept the nation. Now, the “Goodies” goddess is upping the ante by adding Missy Elliott and Fatman Scoop to the official remix.

Lil Wayne sat down for an exclusive with Complex and listed who he personally feels are the greatest rappers of all time and a few of his picks might surprise a lot of his fans.

Cam’Ron, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, 8 Ball & MJG, and UGK were the five artists/duos on Wayne’s G.O.A.T. list. The “6 Foot 7 Foot” performer noticeably left artists from his Young Money imprint off of his list including his 2010 signee Nicki Minaj who Wayne once called the best rapper in Young Money. Wayne was also known for calling himself the “best rapper alive” up until 2014, when the New Orleans born rapper felt as though that was no longer true.

Lil Wayne has worked with UGK’s Bun B on tracks like “Uptown” from Drake‘s So Far Gone mixtape. He’s also worked with Cam’Ron and Jay-Z on “Suck it or Not” and “Mr. Carter” respectively. Early in his career, Lil Wayne almost signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella imprint according to Hov himself, but the deal fell through after a legal dispute with Cash Money CEO Birdman which involved a cease and desist letter.

Lil Wayne’s G.O.A.T. list comes in response to his recent appearance in “The Goat Commercial” for Bumbu rum, an alcoholic beverage he has supported in the past.

“I fell in love with the bottle and the taste the first time I tried it,” Wayne told Complex. “Now it’s Bumbu everywhere—in the studio, parties, the VIP. All my people are on this Bumbu now.”

Wayne is starting to re-emerge onto the scene after his beef with his father-figure and Birdman seemingly comes to an end. The two Hip-Hop giants were seen hugging and chatting together at LIV nightclub in Miami last month. This was the first time the two were spotted together publicly since Wayne filed a lawsuit against the mogul for a reported $50 million.

Although Wayne has dropped a few projects since the lawsuit was filed, fans have been waiting on Tha Carter V album which Wayne has said would be his final album. Birdman guaranteed that the problems between him and Wayne would be solved and the album would be out this year.
