DJ Envy & Cesar 'Flippin NJ' Piña Talks Upcoming Real Estate Show, Family Legacy, Disruption & More

Real Estate is a popular business move for hip-hop stars who are looking to diversify their portfolio and create different revenue streams outside the music. Hall-of-fame radio personality/DJ/Entrepreneur Raashaun “DJ Envy” Casey has grown into the face of hip-hop real estate with years of investing success, mentorship, and disruption alongside his longtime partner and highly-successful realtor Cesar “Flippin NJ” Piña. While there is plenty of real estate-driven reality shows on today’s television, it’s about to get an urban cultural injection in 2023.

50 Cent and Lionsgate announced the development of an unscripted show starring Envy and Flippin NJ set for A&E last October. The upcoming show will join the incredible 50 Cent television empire that is home to the globally popular Power and BMF franchises and recently signed a new non-exclusive broadcast television deal with Fox last month. In the series, Envy and Flippin’ NJ unveil everything that goes into purchasing, renovating, managing, and maintaining a property.

Over the holidays, The Source got the opportunity to speak with Envy and Flippin NJ about a variety of topics surrounding their upcoming show and answered several fan questions on real estate.

Read the full interview, which has been slightly edited and condensed for clarity, below.

[Bryson “Boom” Paul]: First off. Congratulations to the two of you on the upcoming show, Property Players, which is executive produced by 50 Cent on A&E. Now, early news reports say there was a network bidding war for the show?

DJ Envy: I mean, it was a special thing.  I approached 50 and told 50 what we were doing with the real estate, and he was into it, and he loved the fact that we were helping our culture and really pushing it through, and we started spreading the word. And when 50 gets involved, it’s like no other, and we’ve had a bunch of networks reaching out to do deals, and I trust 50.

So 50 wanted to go with A&E, we met with the executives at A&E, and they’re cool, they understand the culture, they’re actually into what we’re doing, and that was a perfect fit. But yeah, we did have some great companies reaching out, but I think A&E is a great home for us.

How does your show differ from other real estate television shows?

Cesar “Flippin NJ” Piña: So pretty much with us, what makes us different is we’re not very cookie cutter. Whenever you look at these TV shows when it comes to real estate, they’re all very cookie-cutter. You buy an ugly house. You fix it. You flip it. This is how much you put in. Boom, that’s all you see. It doesn’t show you all the other parts of it. Let’s say just on the flipping side: you’re dealing with contractors, you’re getting permits, you’re dealing with the city, you’re dealing with contractors trying to rob you, trying to charge you more than what things cost.

We’re going to show everything that happens behind the scenes that you never see on TV. Besides that, right? Not only we flip houses, we’re also into rental properties. There hasn’t been any TV show that shows you anything about rentals. They don’t show you about evictions. They don’t show you about property management. They don’t show you about dealing with tenants, which is one of the craziest things in the world when it comes to that. You don’t see that. They don’t show you anything when it comes to that.

Then we’re also developers. We also develop properties from scratch. We’re putting up a 50-unit building, a 100-unit building, a unit building right now that you’re going to see that on the show too. So as far as real estate, we do pretty much everything across the board. Besides the seminars too, and helping other people and mentoring other people, regular people, celebrities and stuff like that. You never really see anything like that on TV.

DJ Envy: Yeah, and we not even sure if “Property Players” is going to be the name yet, but I will say this. If you look at everything that we’ve done or everything that 50 does, it’s out of the box, but it represents the culture, right? Whether it’s The Breakfast Club, it was a show that nobody ever seen before that came together. At first, it was like, “What is this?” And then we are 13 years in the Radio Hall Of Fame and all these accomplishments, interviews, and all that.

So, it’s a show that’s going to show real life. It’s going to show two dudes, one from Queens, New York, myself. Cesar from Paterson, New Jersey. Our grind, how we came up. His dad was a taxi cab driver. My dad is a retired police officer. So it wasn’t like we had a lot of money. Wasn’t like we came from wealth, wasn’t like we were rich, but we figured it out. And not only figured out, we’re turning it around and teaching our community.

So you going to see a lot of craziness. You’re going to see a lot of tenants chasing out of the buildings. You going to see people sleeping in our buildings. You going to see poo and doo-doo in some of our buildings. You going to see our kids in the buildings. You going to see my wife running out in some of the buildings. You going to see real-ish. It’s nothing made up. And that’s the best thing about this. We didn’t have to make anything up because it’s just so real.

Do you consider yourselves disruptors in real estate?

Envy: Yeah, I definitely am. When it comes to real estate, I am a disruptor. I’m the type of person that I’m going to go left. I remember when I first started talking about Paterson and Detroit, and I had all these real estate “moguls” telling me, “Yo, stop talking about these areas. You’re flooding the areas. You’re flooding the blocks.” I had so many people mad that I was working with Cesar.

But I tell everybody all the time, I’m good. Financially, I’m okay. And if I could help my people become okay, I’m happy. So if it’s going to mean that I get a smaller pie, smaller part of the pie, I’m good with that. Because I know my next-door neighbor’s looking like me. I know my next-door neighbor came from the same place as I did. I know my next-door neighbor’s going to be able to teach his son, or teach his daughter, teach his wife, teach his mother, teach his father.

My parents been living in the same crib for 45 years. Never invested a dime. And not because they didn’t want to, it’s because they didn’t have the knowledge to. They didn’t know how to. And for them, a lot of people, especially older people, where they put their money? Under the mattress. They don’t want to put it into the banks though, because they just don’t have the knowledge.

And I think about it all the time. If my mom’s invested instead of doing some of the things she did, she would be even more well off. Thank God she has a son that did okay and make sure she’s all right. But I think about that all the time. There’s a million of my moms out there. A million of my pops out there. So I’m just trying to change the narrative a little bit.

What is the show’s main priority?

Cesar: That anything is possible. Anybody could do it. Real estate is one of those things that as long as you’re good with numbers, I don’t care what your background is, if you have a college degree or you’re from the streets, it’s just numbers. And if you’re good with numbers, man, you could also be successful too.

I don’t come from a real estate family. I don’t come from any money. My real estate story is not traditional. I learned about real estate in prison. The guy that came in, I taught him how to bid, and he taught me about real estate. And here I am, 17 years later, we’re more than 3,000 units nationwide.

Envy: Yeah, I just want the communities to know and our people to know that it can be done. My assistant, her name is Mercedes, she’s been working with me for two years and when she first got the job, and we started working during the pandemic, she was living in a house. One-floor house with five people. And she’s living in a room, whatever they call a room in the houses.

And I told her, “You continue to work with me, I’m going to teach you not only how to buy your own house and your first house, but I’m going to show you and guide you through it.” And a year into working with me, she got her own crib, three-bedroom house that she purchased. I think she purchased for like 350. It’s now worth like 490. And that’s what it’s about. Teaching people like us how do it, and how to obtain it.

I’m sure she thought she could obtain it, but I didn’t think she thinks it would be that fast. But she can. Sometimes it’s just a matter of saving. Sometimes just putting your priorities first. But the reason I tell that story is because it’s not just about her, it’s now she’s inspiring the people around her. Showing her people that, “Yo, it can be done.” You know what I mean? And that’s what we trying to do.

Envy, you’ve been in the entertainment industry your entire career, so television isn’t too unfamiliar to you. But Cesar, television is a completely new frontier for you. Did you ever see yourself making a TV show?

Cesar “Flippin NJ” Piña: Not at all.  I’ve been in real estate for 17 years, I met Envy about four or five years ago. He’s like, “Yo, I think you got a great story. Get in front of everybody and let them know what you’ve been through and where you’re at today.” And I was like, it was never in my future or even thought about being a public speaker.  I even dropped the book. My wife says all the time that I could barely read and write. I’m just good at numbers. It went number one, Wall Street, number one. Amazon, number one. Barnes and Noble. And now we got a TV show. I’ve never imagined that we would ever, number one, talk in front of large crowds, drop a book, and now a TV show. I never even thought about that.

Of course, you will feature celebrity guests on Property Players. Cesar, I’d like to ask you what is a common question entertainers ask you about real estate?

Cesar: You know what’s the craziest thing that I have learned with a lot of entertainers and especially in hip hop? A lot of these guys are still renters. And when they tell you that, I’m like, “Bro, but you’ve made millions of dollars. You get paid a couple hundred thousand dollars per show. What the hell going on?” And a lot of athletes too. A lot of these guys they got a lot of money, but they don’t know what to do with it. That’s one of the first things they ask me, “How can I invest? How can I start?”

But then you look at them for a second, and you’re like, “Yo, you got more money than me, bro. You still didn’t start?” That’s one of the things, especially with the older hip hop guys, like 90s, early 2000 hip hop, you’d be amazed that most of those guys, man, they didn’t really invest their money a lot.

Fans of the Breakfast Club have heard you two speak on and have differences of opinion on buying properties you haven’t seen. Envy, you are against it, while Cesar frequently does it. Could you two explain your differences of opinion on purchasing unseen properties?

Envy: Well, if you’re a first-time home buyer or you’re new to this, I would say get to that area. I wouldn’t advise going to any area you haven’t seen. Site unseen are for professionals. It’s for people like Cesar, my partner. Even me I purchase a bunch of properties, I still go and see it because I want to touch it. I want to see what the neighborhood is. I want to see what it looks like. I want to see if it’s close to a pharmacy if it’s close to a dog park, if it’s close to downtown where it is.

So me personally, I check on my properties. If I got to drive to Milwaukee, Detroit, Florida, Paterson, Atlantic City, it doesn’t matter. I’m going to go see it. I’m going to make that time. If you can make time to watch your bum-ass Cowboys, I’m sorry that was personal. If you can make time to watch the Cowboy game or football game, or basketball game, or if you can make time to go to the club or go on vacation, you can make time to invest in your future.

Cesar: Real estate is just numbers. When I first started in real estate before … Well, before we started doing the seminars, my thing was Jersey. Patterson, Passaic, Newark, East Orange, Tri-State area, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, I’m buying everything. I want to control it. But then, once I went around the country and I started seeing different areas, it’s just numbers. If you learn the numbers, you could do it anywhere, and that’s all real estate is.

So now, we’re in New Jersey, we’re in Atlanta, we’re in Florida, we’re in Chicago, we’re in Wisconsin, we’re in Ohio, and I’m not there physically. I go to most of those places at least once a month, but it’s just numbers. As far as a person starting, I always recommend rental property. That’s the easiest thing. Get a rental property. Use your FHA mortgage, and then as you learn the business, then expands to other areas. But as far as being an out-of-state landlord and not really being there, it’s very possible to do. Most people get scared about being a landlord out of state, but as long as you find a good property management company, you’re paying them five to 10%, you don’t even have to be there. You don’t have to deal with none of the headaches.

A lot of people relocated to different areas in the US due to COVID-19. As real estate moguls, what are some other areas that you’ve ventured out into looking into as far as buying properties?

Envy: I mean, landscape right now for real estate for myself is a tough spot. Right now, I’m just stacking because I think with interest rates going up, I think a lot of people are going to lose the homes. I think a lot of people overpriced, overpaid for homes. And I think it’s going to be a situation where a lot of people are going to lose. Similar to the 2008 market, where prices went down and there was all this inventory and the people that made off were the people that was buying all that inventory for cheap. And I think this could be a situation again.

So right now, as far as myself, I’m sitting back and I’m waiting to see what happens. I’m just stacking my ends and I’m waiting because I’m starting to see people losing cars. I’m starting to see people losing watches. I’m starting to see people losing homes. And as fucked up as it is, is that’s when people usually get the richest. And I’m sitting back and I’m relaxing. And hopefully, people are out there saving as well.

This would be the time that you get that house that you always wanted that couldn’t afford. This would be that time. And like I tell everybody else, I purchased the house in Jersey and the house was worth 12.8. I paid 5 for it. Perfect timing. That’s when you want to buy, when you can strike those type of deals. So even when you do become broke, or if something does happen, you always have equity in your home.

Cesar: Right now, it’s something very … You hear the media, they’re telling you recession. The same recession. Again, like we were talking about before, everybody’s shopping for Christmas. They’re telling you recession; they’re telling you that the market’s going to change. But this is the thing: when you look in between the lines, rates go up, interest rates went up, and that affects people, mostly minorities, more middle class. They can’t afford to buy now. So they’re like, all right, the rates are going up, real estate is going to go down.

But then, you see at a company like Chase just bought a billion dollars worth of rental properties. If you look at it, in essence, what’s happening in this country is they’re trying to raise … Or we’re becoming a nation of renters. All the big institutions they’re all buying up single-family rentals. In the next ten years, about 40% to 50% of the single-family properties in the US are going to be owned by big institutions. They’re getting rid of the middle guy, the little guy, for being a homeowner or a landlord, and they’re making that person into a renter.

That’s really what’s going on. They’re scaring you, but yet all the big companies, all the big funds, they’re all buying up all the real estate in the world right now. And they’re like, “Oh, rates are going up. Don’t get into real estate,” but come and rent this house for me for $3,500.” You got to read in between the lines a little bit because rents never go down. They never go backwards. They always go up. The rental side, right now, becoming a landlord, you’re dancing to the bank. You’re going to win regardless.

But I don’t see values going down in 2023. I think it’s the even interest rates going up, which actually they went down a little bit now is having … At the end of the day, what it comes down to is supply and demand, and there’s not enough housing. That’s why it’s holding the value. I don’t really see it dropping like that. And if it drops, you’re going to see it more in that single-family area, maybe a five to a 10% drop in single-family homes. But as far as multi-family, commercial, anything we’re renting, it’s on fire. It’s not going back down.

How can hip-hop further educate people about real estate and generational wealth?

Envy: I think it’s what we’re doing now, having these types of conversations. And not only that, people just can’t rely on one conversation and say I know everything. You know what I mean? It’s like anything else. It’s like, yo, if you got to go to the doctor, right? Nine times out of 10, you just don’t go to one doctor if it’s a major surgery. You go to a couple of doctors, you ask a couple of people, and then from there, you decide if that is the right decision for you. And that’s with everything else.

Where is the lack of communication when it comes to urban communities with the banks?

Envy: I mean, I can go to Sears and get a washer and dryer easily, you know what I mean? I can go buy a Mercedes-Benz or BMW easily. But now, if I want a business and I’m trying to create something in my community, it’s almost impossible. And a lot of times, a loan amount is less than the BMW, the loan amount is less than the Mercedes. And they’ll say, oh, that’s because we have some equity.

I don’t see them asking that to other cultures. When other cultures are trying to dive into a business, they dive into it. I got a Jewish friend, his name is Ronnie, and he was telling me in his culture, when a small business opens, he says for the first six months, everybody, it’s not law, but they have to go to that business for the first six months. He said there’ll be lines around the corner. And he said the reason that they do that is they want to make sure that business can sustain for six months and that business will be all right for six months. In our community, we don’t do that.

In our community, you open up a store in Dallas where you selling wherever. The first thing people are say is, “Yo, can I get a discount? Yo, can you hook me up? Yo, can you?” And we have to stop doing that. Although I know discounts and getting things cheaper is great, and it feels good. But sometimes we got to understand that that hurts that man’s business because he has staff, he has employees, he has shipping, he has lights, he has electricity, he has water, he has all those things that he has. So we just really have to support our own, and we also have to give people a little leeway.

I mean, leeway is like all businesses are not going to be great. And it’s the meme I see all the time on Instagram or social media where they say, “You go to McDonald’s a thousand times, and 900 of the times, the frosting machine don’t work. But you still go back.” You know what I mean? But this brother has one business, and maybe he had an employee that had a bad day, or he had one day, and maybe the chef was off one day, and then all of a sudden we never gone back to that business, and we just got to make sure we can’t do that. We have to make sure we support our own.

Cesar, you amassed so much success and employed your friends, loved ones, and enthusiasts interested in the industry. How do you remain motivated following the years of accomplishments?

Cesar: It’s just, bro, there’s really no ceiling to reach when it comes to real estate. I’m from Patterson, New Jersey. Patterson, New Jersey alone, has two billion dollars worth of real estate, and that’s a city of 150,000 people. There really is no threshold for me. When I first started, I wanted to have five, ten units, make five, $10,000 a month, hit that, then hit 100, 200, three. There really is no stopping. Now, I tell myself, “You know what? Once I hit 10,000 units, I’m good.” We’ll probably be at 5,000 in the next two years. But for me, I see myself and my daughter taking over the business eventually in the next, maybe … I’m 45, by the time I’m 50, 52, and then I only come to the office maybe twice a week, kind of thing. And then she just takes over the family business, and I just make sure everything’s running correctly.

But yeah, man, there really is no stopping in real estate. It’s one of those things that you could do forever because the thing with real estate is that is one of the things that is not hands-on. When you think about it, if you’re an athlete, you’re a doctor, you’re an attorney, whatever you are, your career’s going to end eventually. Real estate, that rent is due from the fifth to the 10th, forever. When I’m here, or I’m not here, no matter what, that’s coming in. So real estate is like, you’ll keep on adding more units, and once you have your system in play, there really is no stopping.

And lastly, I know you are in the early stages of production, but when can we expect the release of the debut season of Property Players?

Cesar: We’re probably looking at summer 2023 or September 2023.

It's Official! Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia Set For April 15

All the Is have been dotted, and all the Ts have been crossed; Gervonta “Tank” Davis versus Ryan “King Ryan” Garcia — boxing’s most anticipated super fight — has been signed, sealed, and set for April 15 in Las Vegas.

Presented in cross-promotions with Showtime, DAZN, Premier Boxing Championship, and Golden Boy Promotions, the undefeated boxing stars will clash for the lightweight title and put their undefeated record on the line at a 135lbs catch weight. Sources say Davis (28-0) is the betting favorite with -200 over Garcia’s +160 and 66% implied chance of winning, according to Sports King.

The matchup will pit Garcia’s lightning-fast hands against Davis’s hard-hitting knockout power. While this will be Garica’s first fight in months, this follows Davis’s recent knockout victory over Hector Garcia last November. Garcia and Davis fight will be streamed by Showtime with a rematch, if necessary, set for DAZN should Garcia beat Davis in the first meet.

No official word of the media kick-off for Davis vs. Garcia at press time.

In related news, Davis pleaded guilty last Thursday (Feb. 16) to four counts stemming from a hit-and-run crash in November 2020 in Baltimore that left four people injured, including a pregnant woman. Davis’ sentencing is set for May 5, which means any potential punishment won’t interfere with his ability to compete in April.

Davis is also set to be arraigned on Thursday (Feb. 23) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in connection with a Dec. 27 misdemeanor domestic violence charge of battery causing bodily harm. Davis pleaded not guilty after allegedly hitting the mother of his 1-year-old daughter with a “closed-hand type slap,” according to police, who said she suffered a small abrasion on the inside of her upper lip. She asked the court to dismiss charges in an affidavit filed on January. 24.

MORE: Lanray X Taps Lxnda & Teckzilla For Afro-Love Story, “Fire”

While the show revolves around the activities of the fictional crime-solving unit SSCU, the song is focused on the men and women who are at the mercy of the elements. From the rising cost of living and lack of social amenities and services to being under the daily threat of losing everything they have worked hard to gain. Lanray X takes listeners deep into the den, where we see everyday men and women doing extraordinary things to survive the day.

Lyrics like “Crime, justice and violence, People killed in silence/ We protest, they shoot, Dig too deep get moved” show the grit and gutter and haplessness of the masses while Lxnda’s melodic hook offers a soothing and hopeful recourse that is much needed. All this is underpinned by the somber guitar licks and bouncy afro percussionated drums put together by producer Teck-Zilla.

“Crime & Justice”  is a single from a yet-to-be-titled EP from Lanray X and Teck-Zilla. It was recently featured on the season finale of the Showmax series Crime and Justice Lagos.

Months before recording the song, Lanray X was involved in a near-fatal motor accident during a trip back to production camp after shooting episode 4 with the Crime and Justice Lagos Film crew. The accident claimed 1 life while the rest of the crew members suffered injuries.

However, Lanray X broke his arm in the whole saga and had to record the song under much pain after taking time off from the hospital where he is still undergoing treatment.

Today, Winston-Salem’s old-school hip-hop revivalist OG Spliff releases a 2-pack single offering, consisting of the self-reflective tirade “Son of Toga” and its restorative complement,Building.”

MORE: SOURCE SPORTS: The Cam Newton Era is Over in Carolina, Welcome Teddy Bridgewater

The poet-turned-rapper’s introspective delivery has a nonchalant swing to it, as his syrupy bars effortlessly marry the soulful, sample-driven instrumentals produced by Argov. Largely inspired by the black experience and the dialogue between himself and the man in the mirror, “Son of Toga” sees the rising artist acknowledge his toxic traits, wanting to change but not ready to commit, while “Building” sees him come to terms with the reality that he will have to live with his scars, searching for a way to move forward. To immerse yourself into OG Spliff’s eccentric world is like watching an artist start with a blank canvas, each verse gliding as effortlessly as a paintbrush’s stroke as the wordsmith breathes life into his colorful soundscape.

He raps: “Buy the whole block not just the building /The intention was a revolution / Couple chains on me now they said I’m losing track / You can’t see the execution, I’ll just hit you back.”

OG Spliff’s life has always been steeped in a variety of musical influences.

“My pops was a DJ growing up, which fostered my love for music, especially house music,” he explained. “He opened my world to all sorts of sounds. Some of my earliest music memories with him are from our trips to the local hood gas station, where we’d go buy rap CDs from the bootleg man, ranging from East Coast rappers Fat Joe and Wu-Tang Clan, to West Coast staples, like N.W.A. and Snoop Dogg.”

MORE: Cheri Beasley Becomes the First Black Woman to Lead NC Supreme Court

OG Spliff’s melting pot of influences allows him to create without sonic borders, a feat that many artists hailing from Winston-Salem pride themselves in as well. Equidistant from hip-hop hubs Memphis, Atlanta, and the DMV area, the North Carolina city is bubbling with dynamic artists, including producer 9th Wonder (Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. + more), $hyfromdatre, TiaCorine (featured on OG Spliff’s fan-favorite track “LUV ME”), the late SauxePaxk TB and more.

“Son of Toga” and “Building” are a testament to OG Spliff’s ability to curate a sound uniquely his own, one that is sure to have listeners captivated from the first listen. The rising artist has built his artistry from the ground up; he has opened for MAVI, Lil Durk and Yella Beezy in the past, was featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds Hip-Hop, and has accumulated an impressive two million streams on the platform along the way.

There is no denying that OG Spliff has solidified himself as one to watch as he continues his run of self-reflective, experimental hip-hop.

Jamie Favazza, a spokesperson for TikTok, told Forbes that increasing views to particular videos isn’t the only reason for heating. TikTok will also “promote some videos to help diversify the content experience,” he said.

Favazza also suggests TikTok doesn’t do it that often, claiming only “.002% of videos in For You feeds” are heated. According to an internal document obtained by Forbes, however, heated videos reportedly make up “around 1-2 percent” of “total daily video views.”

MORE: Remember When They Wanted to Ban TikTok? It’s Already Starting To Happen

Rumors of the ability to boost videos have been circulating for years. Facebook, the parent company of TikTok, allegedly knew it was showing inflated view counts and didn’t fix it right away to help entice advertisers and media companies to its platform.

The report comes as TikTok is facing heavy competition from platforms like YouTube and Instagram. TikTok’s lack of transparency around heating makes it hard to tell which videos got to the top organically.

“It is with great honor, privilege, and excitement to announce the Spike Fellows in association with my partners The Gersh Agency and the AUCC,” Lee noted in an official statement. “From the jump, from the get-go, I knew when (not if) I opened a crack in the door, I was bringing as many Black and Brown folks with me in front and behind the camera.”

Lee, who has contributed timeless films representative of the Black community from Mo’ Betta Blues and School Daze to She’s Gotta Have It and Do The Right Thing, has teamed up with Gersh for the debut of the Spike Fellows Program, which was created to nurture the innovation of creative talent from four historically Black institutions within the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC): Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and The Morehouse School of Medicine.

The Spike Fellows Program will begin this month with five fellows selected by a panel including Lee, members of the AUCC community, and Gersh management. Led by Gersh’s Head of Culture, Jayson Council, the Spike Fellows Program will provide five graduating students from AUCC academic debt relief, industry mentorship, post-graduate internships, and full-time employment.

Ten dead and ten were injured on Saturday night (January 22) in Monterey Park, California, following a mass shooting during a Lunar New Year’s Eve event, according to local authorities.

The shooting occurred at 10:22PM at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. The gunman erupted into gunfire inside the ballroom filled with festivalgoers. The celebration in Monterey Park is one of the largest Lunar New Year events in Southern California. This mass shooting, the deadliest in the nation since Uvalde

The wounded were taken to hospitals with conditions ranging from stable to critical. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna commended civilians who disarmed the shooter during a press conference on Sunday (January 22). According to Luna, five women and five men died at the scene and the wounded victims were transported to local hospitals, their conditions ranging from stable to critical.

Following the shooting, the two days of festivities were planned but officials canceled Sunday’s events following the shooting. Other Lunar New Year events, including one at the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena and another at the Citadel Outlets, were also canceled.

A suspect was identified as Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old man whose body was found inside a cargo van with self-inflected gunshot wounds following a standoff with police in Torrance, California, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a Sunday evening news conference.

Authorities say Tran also tried, but failed, to target a second dance hall later in the evening. Asian American public figures would send their prayers and condolences on social media to those affected by the mass shooting upon the breaking news.

On Sunday evening, President Biden ordered the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings until sunset Thursday as “a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence,” per a White House statement.

Diddy won’t be following the latest trend of artists selling their music catalogs for huge payouts, says Combs Enterprises president Tarik Brooks. In a recent interview with Trapial’s Dan Runcie, Brooks revealed that the billionaire mogul had received several offers to sell his music catalog, which includes music from icons like Notorious B.I.G., The Lox, Mary J. Blige, Ma$e, Faith Evans, and so many more, but uninterested in selling at this time.

“For us, we’re in no rush to get rid of a portfolio that could be a part of [music’s evolution],” said Brook. “Who knows how you think about those assets in the future?”

In 2016, Complex reported that Bad Boy Records had sold over 400 million records worldwide and amassed 38 multi-platinum singles. Brooks would go on to reveal that Diddy is taking his time with the offers as he continues to create music and pursue other related ventures. She explained:

“We have the benefit of being able to go slow and kinda take our time and basically run experiments at our own pace to figure out what we want to do,” he continued. “And so from that perspective, people have continually come through with offers, opportunities, and things. And we’ve purposely taken our time as we’ve thought about what Puff’s experience of music is gonna be over the next years as he climbs what he talks about as his second mountain.”

Diddy launched the new Love Records — an R&B-driven record label — last year in a new deal with Motown Records. The first act to come out of that deal is singer/songwriter Jozzy, who released her debut single, “Replay,” in May 2022 at the Billboard Music Awards 2022.

“For the label I’m focused on creating timeless R&B music with the next generation of artists and producers,” said Combs in 2022. “Motown is the perfect partner for my album, and I’m excited to add to its legacy.”

Future, Iggy Azalea, and Dr. Dre are the latest stars to sell their music catalogs for massive amounts of money. Dre sold his catalog assets to Universal Music and Shamrock Holdings last week for $250 million dollars after shopping it around to various holding groups.

The Dallas Cowboys breaks Tom Brady’s seven consecutive games win streak against them when America’s favorite team defeats the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 in the NFL Wildcard on Monday Night Football and advance to the second round of the NFL playoffs.

Brady (#12) was held to 35/66 attempts, 351 yards, one interception, and two touchdowns by the Cowboys. In comparison, Dallas’s Dak Prescott (#4) had a fantastic game with 25/33 attempts, 305 yards, zero interceptions, and four touchdowns with 1 rushing touchdown. Other Cowboys stars include Micah Parsons (#11), Dalton Schultz (#86), CeeDee Lamb (#88), and Tony Pollard (#20).

A wildcard game filled with history as the Dallas defense shut out Brady in the first half, which the legendary quarterback hadn’t experienced since his first playoff game with his former team, New England Patriots, in 2001. On the Cowboy’s offense, Monday’s game was the first time the team missed four out of five field gold attempts, which is also a first in NFL history.

Dak and company’s win over Brady and Bucs marks the organization’s first playoff game since 1997. Statistically, the Cowboys have gone on a four-game winning streak following a loss in the 2022-2023 regular season.

The Cowboys head to the Bay Area to take on long-time rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, on Sunday, January 22, with the victor advancing to the NFC finals against the winner of New York Giants versus Philadelphia Eagles. The 49ers seized the victory the last time they met the Cowboys in January 2022, with a score of 23-17.

“Lol, Y’all just be saying shit to say shit at this point cause that number was pulled outta thin air,” Iggy said in response.

In the announcement, the 32-year-old star shared that her new account supports her upcoming multimedia project in collaboration with the platform, titled “Hotter Than Hell x OnlyFans.” The forthcoming project showcases the “Fancy” hitmaker in mature content only available for paid subscribers. “You better be subscribed & logged on tonight,” she wrote on Twitter on Saturday (Jan. 14). “Something hotter than hell in your inbox at 9pm.”

Azalea and OnlyFans collaboration is a limited-edition one-year run that will conclude on December 23, 2023. Subscribers will receive a variety of content, including illustration, poetry, photography, video for creative yet unapologetically spicy content, and, of course, new music. Azalea credits the new collaboration as inspired by the 90s supermodel era.

Azalea’s latest venture will lead into the release of her forthcoming fourth album, Hotter Than Hell, which drops in late 2023. Already six months in the making, the project will highlight sexuality as well as give a nod to the idea of the centerfold model and is a hyperrealistic version of the blond beauty’s life.

“I’ve been working on ‘Hotter Than Hell’ for six months already and I’m full of excitement and nervous anticipation to begin revealing it to the world, layer by layer,” said Azalea in a press release. “Admittedly, I never knew OnlyFans was a place where I could be creative, so I didn’t expect to be collaborating with them on my biggest project to date.”

Azalea revealed that fans will be very surprised by the upcoming album. “The project is bold and fun — so is this collaboration — I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people,” she says.

Two years since she released an album, the mother of one has been and her music has been a cash cow with touring, licensing, and catalog purchase. She sold her music catalog last November to Domain Capitol Group for an undisclosed eight-figure amount.

Azalea joins the new wave of female rap stars, like Renni Rucci and Bhad Bhabie, launching OnlyFans accounts in the new year. Hip Hop joining and the lucrative income of the platforms has changed others’ prescription on joining as well.

“Once I looked beyond the surface level chatter about what it means to have an OnlyFans,” said Azalea when asked about the decision to join OnlyFans. “I realized it was the perfect platform to launch a multimedia concept on,” she said. “I feel excited about not having to worry about the overwhelming and creatively limiting censorship artists have to navigate when sharing work on other digital platforms.”

“I wanna bring — I’m gonna bring, 8 Mile to television,” 50 Cent dropped the bomb on Big Boy and co-hosts at the interview’s 24:58 mark.

50’s surprise, of course, was met with questions on the potential show’s current stage in development, and he provided a brief answer about where the film-turned-tv series’s current production stage and importance.

He continued: “We in motion. It’s gonna be big. I’m working. I ain’t got no duds. I’m batting 100 … I think it should be there for [Eminem’s] legacy because it’s important to me that they understand it.”

Watch the full interview below.

8 Mile opened to #1 at the box office in November 2002 with $242.9 million worldwide opening weekend. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the film is loosely based on the true story of the iconic hip-hop star’s rise in Detroit’s underground battle rap scene. Along with Eminem, the film co-stars an all-star cast of Mekhi Phifer, Anthony Mackie, Kim Basinger, and the late-Brittney Murphy. 50 Cent was introduced to the world on the 8 Mile motion-picture soundtrack track “Wanksta.”

Jake Paul enters MMA.

Professional Fighters League (PFL) today announced a  historic two-part exclusive partnership with Jake Paul, which will accelerate PFL’s mission to innovate and grow the global sport of MMA.

MORE: SOURCE SPORTS: PFL CEO Peter Murray Talks New Expansions, Playoffs, Betting, UFC & More

First, Jake Paul begins his MMA journey with PFL by signing as the first fighter in the new Pay Per-View division he co-created with PFL called “PFL PPV Super Fights.” Second, Jake Paul,  along with his business partner Nakisa Bidarian, will utilize their expertise and platforms to help recruit, market, and promote the new PFL PPV Super Fight Division for the benefit of all top fighters.

The new PFL PPV Super Fight Division is open for business, effective immediately. The league is in the process of signing top PPV fighters who want to become true economic partners.  Fighters in the PFL PPV Super Fight Division will earn 50% of the revenue from PPV events,  which is groundbreaking pay in MMA.

As the first fighter under contract for PFL PPV Super Fights, Paul is partnering with PFL due to its “fighter-first” culture to co-create this new 50-50 revenue partnership model for all PPV fights.  As a long-time advocate for fighter pay, Paul has also been appointed Head of Fighter  Advocacy and will continue to work towards a business model that benefits all top fighters.

“I’ve proven myself in and out of the boxing ring, and now I am going to do the same in MMA,  and there is no limit to the positive impact I can make on the sport,” said Jake Paul. “I plan to enter the PFL SmartCage and once again show the world that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. Outside of the cage, equal fighter pay and advocating for female fighters has been my passion, and I am aligned with PFL to evolve the sport. I believe in PFL,  their mission, and what they have accomplished in a very short period of time. That is why I  chose to partner with PFL exclusively, both as a fighter and a businessman. As Head of Fighter  Advocacy, I will consistently promote PFL fighters, and I invite all top MMA fighters, both men  and women, to join the PFL and get a payday like they’ve never had before.”

“I founded PFL to innovate, professionalize, and grow MMA, and we have done that with our disruptive sport-season format, which put “fighters first” as they control their own destiny,” said  PFL Chairman and Founder Donn Davis. “Today, we begin our next phase of growth by disrupting the MMA pay-per-view market with an unprecedented new model where fighters will be true 50-50 economic partners in PPV revenues. I’m gratified that Jake and Nakisa chose to  join PFL, and I can’t wait to see what Jake does as a fighter, creator, and promoter in MMA with  PFL.”

“Jake and I have proven our ability to successfully promote and stage major international PPV  events. We look forward to having a similar result with PFL within the sport of MMA.” said  Nakisa Bidarian. “Our creativity and expertise, paired with PFL’s great reputation and strong position, will push MMA into a new phase of growth and one with more freedom and economic opportunity for fighters. Through our years of experience, we have developed a unique network  of people and a novel approach to promotion and content, which we plan to bring to PFL with  full force.”

“Jake Paul begins his journey to fight in MMA today by signing exclusively with the PFL for our global capabilities, innovative platform, and fighters-first culture,” said PFL CEO Pete Murray.  “PFL built a great roster of world-ranked fighters for our PFL League, and PFL is now open for  business to partner with the best MMA PPV fighters on the planet to be part of our new PFL  PPV Super Fight Division.”

Skip Bayless Catches Heat For Saying He Has 'No Sympathy' for Dak Prescott's Fight With Depression

Undisputed co-host Skip Bayless apologized to viewers on Tuesday’s (Jan. 3) episode, with an absent co-host Shannon Sharpe, for his tweet following the horrific injury of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin during the Monday Night Football game on January 2nd between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals. The 71-year-old famed journalist/correspondent was met with huge backlash on Monday night after tweeting to his 3.2 million followers on Twitter: “No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game – but how? This last in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome … which suddenly seems so irrelevant.”

MORE: Social Media Calls For Skip Bayless’s Firing After Insensitive Damar Hamlin Tweet

Bayless began Tuesday’s episode with an apologetic opening monologue, in which he said, “I apologize for what we’re going to do today. I’m not sure I’m capable of doing this show today but, after barely sleeping on it, I decided to give it a try. Maybe I’ll fail, maybe we will fail, but we’re going to try. We wrestled through most of the night whether to even do a show today because we felt like, in our minds, we almost can’t win with this because the last thing we want to do is come off as insensitive to what this young man is going through in a life or death situation.”

An outraged social media called for Skip Bayless’s firing by Fox Sports 1 on Monday evening, with several retired NFL football stars like 6-time Pro Bowl wide-receiver Terrell Owens calling him “dead wrong” and hoping he loses his job. The network made no comment on Skip Bayless or the Damar Hamlin situation at press time.

In the midst of the backlash on Monday, Bayless followed up his original tweet with a concerning tweet about Hamlin’s health and the ultimate importance of health for the players over the game.

“Nothing is more important than that young man’s health,” he wrote. “That was the point of my last tweet. I’m sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to.”

Although absent from Undisputed on Tuesday, Shannon Sharpe shared his prayers with fans, Hamlin and his family on Monday evening. “Please keep Demar Hamlin and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” wrote The three-time Super Bowl champion. “NFL doesn’t have a manual on how to proceed after an incident like this.”

Amid Damar Hamlin’s injury, the NFL has announced that the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals will not resume this week.

The Queen of Memphis and former Three 6 Mafia recording artist Gangsta Boo died on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 1) — DJ Paul broke the news to fans on Instagram.

Memphis Fox 13 News reports that Gangsta Boo, real name Lola Mitchell, was found dead at approximately 4 PM CST in Memphis. There is no official word for the cause of death at press time.

Gangsta Boo was seen attending a New Year’s Eve party on Saturday evening via Instagram stories. Artists across the nation shared their condolences on social media following news of Boo’s passing.

Gangsta Boo was the second female member of the iconic Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia, which also included DJ Paul, Juicy J, Crunchy Black. Joined the group at 15 years old, Boo is best known for Dirty South classics “Where Dem Dollas At” and “Yeah Hoe.” She parted ways with Three 6 Mafia in 2002 and pursued a solo career that has been idolized by a lot of today’s female hip-hop stars.

Boo recently sat down with Nore and DJ EFN on the hugely popular Drink Champs podcast to share her journey and impact on today’s hip hop.

Gangsta Boo recently collaborated with Latto and fellow Memphis rapper GloRilla on the new hit “FTCU,” released last month on Streamcut/RCA Records.

“Latto has been showing me support for a while,” said Gangsta Boo in a recent interview. “I always see her mentioning my name when they ask her who were some of her inspirations, and when she talked about her dad, she told me that her dad used to support a lot of female rappers and I was one of them. So, that’s kind of how it came about. We just started following each other on the Internet and supporting each other and s—. And yeah, she hit me up last minute. She was like, “Man, I smoked a blunt and had a genius idea. She’s like, ‘The song already done, we already did the video and s— but I want you to be on the outro, the intro or some sort of adlibs.’ I was like, ‘Of course, Latto. I got you, man.’ It was simple just like that. Of course, I would’ve wanted to spit and kill on that mother — but just anytime I can contribute and support any female rapper that I like, that like me back, I’m always down for it.”

Gangsta Boo’s death marks the first hip-hop death of 2023.

For over 30 years, through countless chart-topping hits and landmark artists, Death Row Records has stood as one of the music industry’s most iconic and culturally significant platforms.

MORE: Snoop Dogg Says Jay-Z Threatened to End NFL Partnership For Halftime Show

Today, it is under powerful new management. Recently acquired by Snoop Dogg, the infamous musical empire has reemerged as a multi-category cultural platform across music, fashion, entertainment, and cannabis, all united by the blockchain for a new generation.

Today at 8AM PT, their first cannabis drop will be announced on social media at @DeathRowRecords and @DeathRowCannabis, using an animation of their globally recognized logo and reveal of their branded pre-roll tube. The teaser video was created by artist MylarMen with a soundtrack by Kevin Gilliam aka DJ Battlecat. The 22-second clip is sure to electrify the global fans of the label while being a buzzy beginning of Death Row Records’ domination of the weed nation.

Promising to return Death Row to its former glory, all elements of the former label are being refitted for today’s audience and their evolving tastes. The first drop debuts in limited edition commemorative metallic bags, featuring the iconic hooded prisoner figure seated in an electric chair on the front. Important to note: this is a brand new version of the prisoner that was designed for the launch of the cannabis brand – the main difference being he has one hand broken free and is smoking a fat doobie.

Another especially exciting note for those cannabis connoisseurs is the man responsible for curating Death Row Cannabis. AK – hand-selected by Snoop himself – is a longtime West Coast legacy cultivator and industry insider, best known for his role alongside former partner WizardTrees in sprouting, selecting, and expertly growing the RS11, Studio 54, and Shirazi strains from exotic cannabis breeder DEO. He’s the man behind the IYKYK brand SMKRS, and he is also well known as the VP of Cultivation for TRP LLC, who owns a majority of the Cookies stores across the nation including their facilities in Florida.

AK’s reputation for growing “fire” weed and his palette when it comes to selecting winning strains, keeps people camped out in lines in front of their dispensaries.

Launching in-stores next week, Death Row Cannabis is not one to keep its fans waiting. The brand will soon make an announcement with an exact date and locations for their debut drop.

Select Cookies California stores (Brentwood, San Bernardino, and San Diego) will be the first locations to carry Death Row Cannabis, with other locations and more states to follow soon.

After a productive introduction into the world of Pay-Per-View boxing, BLK Prime, a Silicon Valley-based video-on-demand tech company, is full steam ahead for 2023. BLK Prime’s vision is to produce six major Pay-Per-View events in 2023, showcasing some of the biggest fights in boxing for the fans.

“The plan in 2023 is to make the most compelling fights in boxing,” said Chester Johnson, Vice President of BLK Prime Boxing. “The fans deserve to see the best fighting the best and we will do everything in our power to make that happen. We are open to working with everyone in the sport to bring back the glory days of boxing. Our platform is extremely functional and delivers a high-quality stream. Our cable and satellite pay-per-view distribution agreements with our domestic and international partners are in place for 2023 as well.”

The first event for BLK Prime in 2023 will feature former 4-division world champion Adrien Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) vs. Ivan Redkach (23-6-1, 18 KOs) in a highly anticipated welterweight matchup. The scheduled 10-round bout, promoted by Christy Martin Promotions, will take place in Atlanta, GA in February. More information will be announced at a later date.

On December 10, BLK Prime penetrated the core of PPV boxing by showcasing pound-for-pound king, Terence “Bud” Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs), who put his WBO welterweight title on the line against David Avanesyan (29-4-1, 17 KOs). The fight ended in round six with the knockout of the year when Crawford floored Avanesyan with a crushing right hook to the head. In the co-main event, superstar Cris Cyborg won a unanimous decision making her U.S. boxing debut a success, and solidifying a great night of boxing.

Officials at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Neb, stated tickets sold at the gate for Crawford vs. Avanesyan generated a massive amount of revenue for BLK Prime as it was the highest-attended boxing event where Terence calls home. In addition, global PPV buys exceeded expectations.

“I’m very humbled by everything that’s transpired in our first Pay-Per-View event,” continued Johnson. “Terence Crawford is an incredible fighter and proved he’s worthy to be showcased on the Pay-Per-View stage, as our buys did exceptionally well. Furthermore, we didn’t give away any outstanding complimentary tickets, so our gate did fantastically.”

Todd Grisham headed the star-studded commentary crew along with former world champions Zab JudahAntonio Tarver, and Paulie Malignaggi, while Dave Ryan took control of the host desk, giving the production a prestigious look. In addition, Lupe Contreras and Miguel Flores managed ring announcing duties, with Cheyenne McCargo serving as the unofficial scorecard judge.

“2023 will be a big year for BLK Prime,” Johnson concluded. “We plan on implementing some innovative features to our shows that I believe will make our events more entertaining for the fans. I’m looking forward to kicking off the new year with an amazing event”

The rising hip-hop star displayed his infatuation for the animal in his music video, “Hard,” which saw him rap in a cage surrounded by three roaming lions. “I have never been scared of lions,” he says in a press release. “I feel like they are my spirit animal. I always saw something great in them.”

“I watched my tears turn to blood / I watched my freedom turn to jail with some thugs / Feel like I’m walking a high rise when push-come-to-shove / I could be with the world but I’m pushing for love,” Kaash raps in the song’s opening. In the VisualzByDee-directed video, Kaash remembers times of losing his best friend, run-ins with the law, and more while Kodak smokes on a stair case and raps about the similar run-ins and unable to see the love cause he got blood in his eyes.

“Pushin For Love” marks 2G and Yak’s first collaboration together. No official word on whether the new collaboration will appear on a forthcoming album from either artists. Recently 2G.Kaash was spotted in the studio working with fellow Dallas rap star Yella Beezy.

The two next-up contenders are set to main event the WBA eliminator on Saturday evening in Las Vegas on Showtime Boxing. One must let go of the undefeated title and the opportunity to fight for a title in the 12-round lightweight bout. The fight is Martin’s most important night of his career yet.

Martin spoke with The Source’s Bryson “Boom” Paul last week via Zoom on the importance of this bout. Throughout the conversation, The Ghost shares Errol’s promise to him following his last victory, Rivera’s skill, being the most wanted fighter in the lightweight division, if he is the most dangerous man in the lightweight division, more

Read the full interview below.

[Bryson “Boom” Paul”]: This is a big deal, man. This is a WBA eliminator, man. So after this, it’s the title shot, man. How do you feel?

[Frank Martin]: I feel good. I’m working. I’m ready to go out there and do what I do.

Now, this is also a special moment for you, something that you probably haven’t even thought about. This is your third time fighting in Vegas, and this’ll be your third time fighting an undefeated fighter. So tell me about the experience that you’re going to take into this fight, being that one 0 must go.

Just my grind. My grind, with me having Derrick James behind me, that coaching, that’s definitely going to take me over the top. And then just my natural ability, just my skills. But like you say, somebody 0 got to go, and I feel like it’s one of them things, it’s going to be who want it. When we in there, it’s going to be like, which one of them going to bite down and go get it? I’m known for doing it, so it ain’t nothing. It ain’t going to change.

You are fighting Michel Rivera on December 17th at the Cosmo in Las Vegas. They have him ranked number two and got you ranked at number 10. How do you feel going into this being the favorite, though?

Man, I ain’t really looking at it like that. They can rank it how they want to rank it, but it all depends when we get in there in that ring. So I got to just go in there and just do what I do. I don’t let the rankings or none of that play with my head. I’m going for the number one spot. So I got to go ahead and handle my business.

Now, what a lot of people don’t know is this is a fight that was promised to you by Errol Spence Jr, who’s also helping you promote the fight. Can you add some clarity to that promise? Where does this promise come from? How did they make sure you got this fight that you wanted so bad?

From the jump, he told me he was going to give me big fights, “I’m going to get you the big fights you want,” and everything like that. So this one, it had got mentioned earlier in the year, but there was some stuff going on with me or whatever, so we wasn’t able to make it happen. But it came back around once Chris Colbert didn’t end up taking the fight or whatever, he said he wasn’t ready.

So this came back around. So I’m like, “I’m with it, but what this for? Is it something that we fighting for?” And it was, it’s the title eliminator to get me closer to the WBA belt. So with that, that’s all I needed to hear. I’m like, “Let’s get it.”

Because a lot of people ain’t going to fight me. None of the top guys going to just be like, “All right, yeah, we’re going to fight him.” I’m going to have to work. I got to earn it.

So this one of them things that I’m like, “Yeah, it’s the opportunity, I have to take this to get me in that door with them top dogs or whatever, and get me in that position.” So they can’t say, “What’s his ranking? Where he at?” I’m right there. I’m in the number one spot.

That’s why he was promising me that, basically, he was going to give me the big fights and give me a belt or whatever. So this is the perfect setup. This is the perfect opportunity for me.

Now, this is your third fight this year. How do you like this activity? Do you want to take this into next year, where you fight three times a year?

Right now, I’ll fight more. If I could fight four times, four, three. I would really like to fight four. Give me four quarters. Give me four quarters, and I’m going to rock with it. Three good, but four, if I can get four next year, or three, either/or, cool.

You got a lot of fighters in the lightweight division, a lot of them got their eyes on you, and a lot of them have big fights that also involve you in the future. But when other enthusiasts that do these interviews ask you about future fights, ask you about this person, that person, does it ever bother you that they don’t sit here and focus on the fight at hand? Obviously, you are not overlooking anybody. You sitting here like, “Rivera is the one in front of me right now, and then we’ll deal with the rest later.” But do you ever get annoyed or frustrated with people asking you questions as far as future fights or future fighters?

Sometimes. Sometimes, because a lot of times people jump ahead of what’s in front of them. I try to be in that moment. I try to focus on what’s right there right now. Because a lot of those fights they talking about might not even happen. Sometimes it’s a waste of energy to even talk about it. I feel like I’m going to respect my opponent that I got right now, and handle my business with him. And then I would prefer, I like to talk more about other fights when I don’t got no fight booked up, something like that. But talking about another fighter, I would prefer to just stick on my man.

Rivera, is he your biggest challenge so far?

Yeah. I would say fighting style, and record wise and all of that, yeah, I’d say that he’s the more skilled fighter. He is similar to the last dude I just fought, I feel like. Might be just a little slicker, but I feel like he similar to the last guy I fought.

Speaking on Jackson, and your last fight, you obviously won, TKO in the 10. But I want to ask you, looking back at the tape, what were some things that you noticed about yourself that you worked on this camp?

Man, there was a lot. I can’t tell you what I’m working on now, you’re going to have to see that. That fight, I didn’t really have a lot of time to prepare for. I probably found out 10 days before the fight. Energy low, so really the game plan, we worked certain things, but some of the stuff wasn’t sticking with me. Energy low, can’t really register everything.

So that fight, I feel like it was a lot of mistakes that I made in that fight. And also, I felt like it was an off night for me, just within. Just my body, there was some stuff that wasn’t working for me that night or whatever. My timing, I was just off a tad bit.

But I figured it out. Derrick gave me good instructions in the corner or whatever, to get me in that zone that I needed to get in. But I had to figure it out, and find it, that fight. But there was some things that I didn’t lock down on, some shots I got hit with that I wasn’t supposed to get hit with. I was real stationary that fight.

Just really trying to get what I got, get that knockout, but I wasn’t doing it. I wasn’t doing it the smooth way. I made it harder than what it had to be.

Obviously, this is a bigger fight, so everything is amped up, and everything’s a little bit different as far as training. Going into training camp now, how has training been for you this time around?

Yeah, it been good, man. My sparring partners, I got a lot of good sparring partners for this camp. Real good sparring partners. I’ve got a nutritionist. Added on extreme conditioning. EJ been real hands-on with me, just as far as we’ve been locked in together, running, working out, everything. We just been locked all the way in. I done added quite a few things different in this camp.

Now your promoter, how has your relationship with Errol Spence grown in and out of the ring?

Oh, it’s good. Me and EJ’s relationship always been good. With this camp, with this fight, he been making sure I’m good with everything. If it’s anything that I need, or anything that could help me, he asking me, like, “Tell me what you need, whatever.” He just making sure I’m all the way mentally where I need to be, physically. Whatever I need, he making sure I’m getting that, so I can be all the way prepared for the fight. He been tapped in with me.

You are going to be a top dog one day yourself. Like you said, EJ has taken care of you, made sure you got everything you need. In the future, when you on top, are you going to be also reaching back to a fighter like yourself? What is something that you’ve learned from EJ that you plan to take on into the future when you reach back for other fighters?

Man, a lot. It’s like little stuff. Some people take things differently though. Some people may be like, little things help him out the most, like if it is a conversation, if it’s showing somebody a move, if it’s whatever. Just how he is with, not even just me, it’s fighters who ask him stuff.

We just went to a fight over the weekend, and it’s a lot of fighters who admire him. So just how he cool, he real social with his fans, and then with other fighters. Not too many fighters, but if it’s a fighter he rock with, you know he going to support him. He going to support him.

So just that right there, just being real supportive of the up-and-coming fighters that I like, that I rock with. Just being supportive of them, and giving them the motivation, if it’s words … Just certain things go a long way.

You have all the abilities and attributes to become one of the greatest lightweights of all time. But I want to ask you, in your opinion, who are your top five lightweights of all time?

I switched it up a lot. I switch mines up a lot. I like Roberto Duran. I pick up a little bit from everybody though, so it’s something from everybody.

Roberto Duran. Pernell Whitaker. Meldrick Taylor. I like Meldrick Taylor. Floyd. Who else? Let me rock out with my four. Let me rock out with my four.

You said this time you got a nutritionist and whatnot. I want to ask you, what have you learned about your eating habit with this nutritionist?

For the most part, I be on point when it come to eating good and everything. Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to eat when … I like seafood a lot. But I don’t just be eating and get out of shape, and just be, “Oh, I got to …” I’m always in shape.

But, with this nutritionist, it’s just everything that I’m eating, I ain’t really gaining too much weight. I’m having energy, I’m eating all the right stuff that I’m supposed to eat, everything balanced. He know exactly like, “All right, I’m going to cut the carbs off this week, and I’m going to take up the protein.” He knowing what to do. I don’t know how to do that on my own.

I normally cook on my own, but he making it easy. Making sure, in the morning, breakfast made as soon as I get up. Lunch, when I get out the gym, done. Dinner, same thing, when I get back, everything done. So I’m eating, and I can do what I got to do.

In training camp right now, but you still have your downtime, so I want to know, what are you doing to stay relaxed in the downtime? Are you watching anything? Reading anything? Meditations? What are you doing in the downtime?

I was doing yoga. I’ve been doing hot yoga. I be doing that cryo. I be doing that cryotherapy, the compressions, and all of that stuff. I got this book I’ve been reading, it’s called … You going to know what it is. What’s the name of the book? The Way of the Superior Man. I’ve been tapped into that book or whatever. I got to tap back in, I ain’t read it in about two weeks though, so I’m going to get back into it. That keep me my mental on point.

This is The Source. Of course, we have to talk about the music. Who are you listening to in the gym, training?

I’ll be listening to that new Lil Baby. That new Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch. Got some NBA. I got some NBA in there, for sure. We be having a little bit of everything going in the gym.

MORE: SOURCE SPORTS: Caleb Plant Talks Anthony Dirrell, Canelo, Eddie Hearns, & Boxing Future

In the gym, it’s not always serious. Boxers often crack jokes on each other a lot in training. Now honestly, who brings the heat?

EJ got the heat. Errol got the heat. Errol got the heat. He got the heat, for sure. He don’t get on me. We be on Reece, we be on Maurice’s head.

Rivera is arguably the toughest you will face yet, but definitely not the toughest opponent that you will face in your career, I’m sure. One 0 must go. Are you worried at all about losing your 0, whether it’s now or in the future?

Nah. Nah, I’m not. I don’t want to lose it, so I’m working, I’m working, working, working. Doing everything I got to do so I can keep it. I’m into, whatever going to get me to where I got to get to. So I ain’t like, “Man, this is a tough fight. I don’t want to lose.” No. I’m fitting to challenge myself. I’m going to do everything I got to do to get this W, but for the most part I’m fitting to challenge myself and go get it. So winning is the only thing right now in my mind.

How does it feel with Showtime Boxing and Premier Boxing Champions getting behind you as a promising main event headliner?

Man, it’s dope. It’s dope. All the hard work is right here now. It’s up to me to go out here and do what I’m supposed to do to keep it going. All the hard days, all of that, is right here, so I just have to go out here and do what I do to keep this momentum going.

You have to set the record straight. Is Frank Martin, the ghost himself, the most dangerous man in the lightweight division?

Yeah.

morray da rant lyrics

Today, breakout singer-rapper Morray returns with the unfiltered new single “Da Rant.”

The brutally honest track doubles as a recap of the rising star’s rough-and-tumble upbringing and a statement of intent about his future. “DA RANT” is accompanied by a suitably candid video, which is composed of behind-the-scenes footage.

MORE: [WATCH] Morray is Joined by Cordae for “Still Here” Video

Morray kicks off “DA RANT” by addressing his past. “Was running wit the wrong crowd,” the North Carolina MC raps over propulsive beats and searing synths. “Young, dumb, mad, loud — time past me by when I was sitting on that green mile.” After turning his life around, however, the hitmaker is optimistic about his future. “Nas, Biggie, Jay Z, man, I need that kinda stamp,” Morray spits, “Tyson Floyd and Ali, I’m tryna be that kinda champ.”

The overwhelming personal nature of “DA RANT” is captured by the video, which shows snippets of Morray’s life as he hangs out in the studio, greets friends and strangers in his community, and lights up the stage.

The track arrives on the heels of “Broken Vows” and “Letter To Myself,” another harrowing look at his past. Both singles continue what has been a remarkable 2022 Morray including not just new music, but sold-out tour dates, and awards recognition.

Other 2022 highlights include the Southside-produced “Ticket” and “Momma’s Love” as well as the poignant “Still Here” featuring Cordae.

Morray also attended his first GRAMMY Awards this year, where he earned nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for J. Cole’s”m y l i f e” (also featuring 21 Savage). Those Grammy nominations are the culmination of a meteoric rise that started with “Quicksand,” a GOLD-certified hit that reached the Billboard Hot 100, from his critically acclaimed debut album Street Sermons. Morray joined J. Cole on The Off-Season Tour and was a standout performer at Dreamville Fest. He also performed at Fayetteville’s Juneteenth Jubilee, marking his first-ever performance as a headliner in his hometown.

Now, with “DA RANT,” Morray showcases his ability to turn pain into art, inspiring listeners with his remarkable journey along the way.

Kicking off another chapter, critically acclaimed Dallas, TX rapper Trapboy Freddy returns with his new No Distractions mixtape, available now on all streaming platforms via 300 Entertainment.

MORE: [WATCH] Charleston White Threatens To Get Police To Shut Down Trapboy Freddy’s Alleged Drug Spots

The 14-track project boasts anthems such as the new single “Switches” feat. Lil Keed & Yella Beezy. Trapboy Freddy’s scorching flow takes center stage as fellow Dallas stalwart Yella Beezy pops off with a hypnotic cameo of his own. Illuminating his unbreakable spirit, the late Lil Keed shines on with a punchy appearance as well.

No Distractions serves as the successor to Trapboy Freddy’s fan-favorite 2021 tape, Distractions.

After a season of turbulence, he opted to ignore the static from the media and the game and instead hone in on what matters the most—the music. As such, he delivers a dynamic, diverse, and potentially definitive body of work. “I tuned out all the noise,” says Trapboy Freddy on his new project. “Since the release of ‘Distractions,’ I dealt with some legal issues and became a father, so my priorities have completely shifted. Trivial issues that used to bother me don’t affect me anymore. I’m focused on my music, my family, my businesses and not repeating old mistakes. No Distractions is more than a mixtape title, it’s a lifestyle.”

In addition to production from Bankroll Got It, DJ Chose, Blame It On Monstah, BootMeUpJT, and more, he joins forces with Hotboy Wes and Lil Jairmy on the head-nodding “YM,” while diamond-certified rap superstar Fetty Wap pulls up for the impactful and infectious “Selling Dreams.” Rap and R&B songstress Enchanting lends her seductive touch to “Down A** Chick” and his 300 label mate Hunxho brings his signature energy on “Tell Me Nuthin.” The project culminates with a pensive and powerful moment punctuated by his signature delivery on “Lonely At The Top.” It also includes previously-released singles “Too Much Booty” and “Dream Of.

Trapboy Freddy rolled out of Dallas, TX with a focused, fierce, and fiery flow, and he continues to ignite the culture. After stirring up buzz with a series of independent projects, his vision crystallized on 2021’s Distractions. The latter posted up over 10 million total streams powered by standouts such as “Buss It Open” feat. Lakeyah and “Freddy” feat. Young Thug. In addition to acclaim from REVOLTXXL, and more, he has collaborated with everyone from the late Young Dolph to multiplatinum Dallas phenomenon Yella Beezy along the way. Now, he’s primed for a major moment with No Distractions and much more to come.

[Bryson “Boom” Paul]: Knowing what you’ve gone through leading up to this album. How does it feel to see this project come to fruition?

[Sadboy Loko]: I mean, like you said, it was an up and down, smiles and frown. Little rollercoaster, but I mean, I don’t try to look back at the pack. The past is just the future. It’s cool. Brighter day. I’m free, I’m out. I was about to drop August 12th, Sin Fronteras, so it’s like, it’s cool. I’m not even tripping. I’m free, freedom at its best, baby.

How’d it feel getting back into recording for this project?

It was cool. Well, with this one, it was just, man, Cricket knows what’s up. It was just like two studio sessions, in and out. We were quick. It was like vibing. It was different. The beginning was something different because of the regional sound, but once started turning up with him, like, man, it was on go, gas.

You released I’m Still Here 2 before this. Describe the growth in your music from then to now?

I mean, you can hear it in the lyrics. It’s just evolved, business type now, you know what I mean? I’m trying to just get the money. Before, it was all gang bang, all this hood, straight hood shit. Now it’s more like life experiences, you know what I mean? Like what you said, I went through ups and downs. So I describe it in the music.

Now a changed man.  Can you still listen to your older music?

My first records? Yeah. I look back at them and I’m like, damn, I was on some savage, just disrespectful at school, you know what I mean? Now it’s like, all right. You know what I mean? Just mellow it out, just shit that motherfuckers can vibe to, you know what I mean?

You came out of a bid into an all-new, all-different world in post-COVID.  How did you adapt?

Well, you got to remember when I got out, I got out to that COVID, like the lockdown. So it was from lockdown to lockdown, but I mean at least still had a little bit of freedom, you know what I mean? But it was just you couldn’t go nowhere. Everything was deserted. But now it’s cool. I get to enjoy the summer. Summertime jams on there. You got a few jams in there for the summer. So it’s perfect. I’m just waiting on it.

You did pretty much a revamp of Summer Nights, I would say, obviously a West Coast classic. For those that don’t know, it’d be a worldwide classic. But how’d it feel when you heard the beat for the first time and then just like, All right, bet, I’m go with this. I’m going to run with it?

Just the vibe. The vibe. You can’t, you know what I mean, can’t control the vibe. If it’s a vibe, it’s a vibe. You start vibing to it, turned it up. You know, smoke breaks in between and just gas it.

Now back to the making of this project. To you, what is your favorite moment during the making of the album?

Most of the corridos, like the regional, because that’s something different for me. I’ve been around it all my life. But to actually do one, wow, that ain’t never happened. Cricket knew what he was doing. So it was just like once I got into the vibe, he was smart. He popped out bottles and everything. Damn near… Instead of a wine tasting, it was like a tequila tasting at the studio and then it just started vibing to it. That one was just different. Turning out two actual pretty cool corridos that I’ve never done mixed with hip hop and shit.

How was your mental health going into making this project?

I’m good. I’m healthy. I’m probably the healthiest I’ve ever been, even when I was young. I’m like here drug-free. You know what I mean? I like smoking, just drinking. So it’s cool. You know what I mean?

Explain the importance of this project to you?

It’s important because it’s one for one thing, like a bucket list. Mine was a bucket list thing. I’ve been, for several reasons, because I’ve already I did the whole YG thing, you know what I mean, with the industry. So that was more of a turn-up for me and my homies. We down here party for three, four years, you know what I mean? So it’s just a turn-up experience. Now this one was my family. My parents could enjoy this, you know what I mean? This is their shit, their type of vibe. Hey, pa, you want to go to a show? I got you as if, hey homie, you want to go to show, VIP, I got you. It’s more like, you know what I mean? Bucket list check-offs and shit. I got to work with legends from our people, you know what I mean?

Did you have the most fun making this project that you’ve had in a long time?

Yeah, this album was fun making. It was just a vibe, man. Like a turn up. I was in there, what, two sessions, back to back. It was a rap. Like every session, I play something, boom, just start playing it. Vibe out, smoke, smoke outs and then just straight to it. Some of it should just get freestyled out like, oh shit, get me in there, let me do it real quick. Boom. It’s just a vibe. Some of them, there was already a verse there for me, like a feature. So just it was gas on, like, oh he got off. All right, wait up motherfucker, hold it.

How’d you come out with a whole album in two sessions?

Man, it is just the production. Once you put good production, you got the solid. It’s… No, you don’t have to sit there and choose from what’s hot and what’s not. If you already got solid ass production, the fuck. It’s pick whatever you want. Let’s roll.

Now you mentioned YG. A lot of people would want to ask, man, what is your guys’ relationship like now?

We cool. I just talked to him last month. We cool. I mean, he’s doing his thing, I’m doing mine, you know what I mean? I’m over here doing Latin music, so I mean, we straight, you know what I mean? Shout out to the boy.

Explain the energy in this album?

They going to feel it. Once you bump it, make sure you bump it, but don’t blow all your speakers. I don’t want you to blame me for that shit, you know what I mean. But once you bump it, you’re going to feel it. It’s just some good vibe shit. like summer. It’s a summer experience. It’s like a perfect summer album. It’s going to have all your… You’re going to run, go through it, and then boom, that love jam, you’re going to probably be with your lady, you know what I mean? It’s just a vibe. There’s a drinking jam in that you probably want to drink, you know what I mean? Man, it’s a little bit of everything You can fuck to it, drink to it, bang to it, whatever you want.

You did the major label thing. So what are some things that you learned that you not only adapted to your own business?

I mean, for main thing you got to do is brand yourself. Ain’t nobody going to brand you. Ain’t nobody going to like, oh this is… Brand yourself. Make a name for yourself. You know what I mean? Your brand is everything. You know what I’m saying? It might become a motto at the beginning, but once you push, it is going to become a thing that people like, shit, damn near live by. You know what I mean? So it’s at that time, like I said, I was just partying and then now if I… Man, take this business serious, you know what I mean? Instead of turning up with that person, network with that person. You feel me?

Now six albums in and at a turning point in your career. What is your outlook on your career moving forward?

I mean, bright future, you know what I mean? Sky’s the limit. I’m just trying to do the most with it. Whatever I can, I’m going to do it. Take full advantage. Like I said, I’m free, so I’m no limit to what I’m not going to do. You know what I mean? See if I could, I’ll drop another one, back to back. How contracts go, like hold up. I’d be back to back on these motherfuckers.

What is something new you learned about yourself during the making of this project?

I damn near can do it all. I mean, you know, never expected something like you throw yourself into something, like, nah, I can’t do that. I tried it, and it came out cool.

Explain the importance of sticking with one producer on a project?

It’s more of me. See, I have, my emails are filled with beats that are from different producers, but there’s only certain producers that will know you and your sound with you. You know what I mean? It was like damn near Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre back then, you know what I mean? Or YG to a Mustard in their generation. You know what I mean? So it’s like you got to know your own producer. So it’s like, man, they make bangers together, so damn near when your fans are like, oh, they just linked up. Oh shit, okay, it’s back. He’s not fucking around no more.

As in you’re trying everybody’s sound, now you’re trying to do their sound, not yours. You feel me? Unless you’re right there with that motherfucking producer and you can go through his whole fucking catalog then, by all means. But if he’s just sending you one or two, that’s not your sound. That’s his sound, his preference that he think the sickest production, he thinks are sick, that will fit to you. You feel me? As in that producer for you and make me… He knows what you like, he knows your shit, he knows your collabs. He knows everything. You know what I mean? It’s just homemade.

How did you feel divulging more about yourself personally on this project that you know fans are going to find out about?

On this one, they’re going to be more surprised on that rock jam. I got a rock jam in there. They’re going to trip out. If they don’t read it off the track listing and they just go down to shuffle, you’re in for a surprise. They’re like what the, But I mean it is music. Once you hear it out you’re like, oh, that’s sick. But something new. I mean, all the love jams, like the summertime jams. I got some party jams in there. You like man, Sadboy just did a pizza with all toppings.

Now we know your name is Sadboy. But we got to ask because the ladies want to know, are you in love right now?

I mean, loving ain’t hard to find, but I’m numb to it. But I mean, you never know, you know what I mean? I can find it.

Let’s talk about Chicano music. What is the current state, in your opinion, of Chicano music?

We’re up there. I mean, Latinos in general, they’re up there. It’s like right now you can’t go anywhere without seeing or hearing a Latino, you know what I mean? Anywhere, even TV, as far as TV, radio, anything, you can’t, It’s just everywhere. So Chicanos right now, it’s been going on, but now it’s the top perfect timing. It’s like right there. Everybody’s getting heard and there’s a lot of talent. So it’s perfect. I mean, as in back then, it was just rare. You hear people rap, there was only a few. Now I got out and it’s like, damn, a whole generation of rappers. But I mean, that’s cool, because it’s a lot of talent.

How do you balance not only just being labeled as a Chicano rapper, but just being a superstar rapper in general or a superstar artist?

I mean, I don’t even label it even as Chicano. It’s just music to me. You know what I mean? I do the shit with the passions, for passion type of shit. So it’s like, I don’t really divide it or anything like that, you know what I mean? So it’s just music, some good music turned up to, you know?

How do you balance giving people that old Sadboy and giving people that new Sadboy?

They got one. They got that for Gangster for Life, that’s all. You know what I mean? They got that flashback, you know what I mean? So they couldn’t be mad at me at the whole album. But I mean, either way, you’re going to hear some songs, you be like, oh shit, that’s right. It’s just updated. You feel me?

What are some new life choices you’ve adapted to your lifestyle?

Make yourself a priority. You break yourself trying to make the next person happy. Once you make yourself a priority and numb everything out, you’re straight. You’re good.

Obviously, with the album comes a tour. How ready are you to get out on the road?

Ready to run. I’m ready to run. You know, mandatory, you got to do Los Angeles, but I’m looking forward to Texas. Going to Texas.
