Born and raised in Queens, NY, Meyhem Lauren has long been one of the culture’s most reliable brands; built from quality, consistency, and flavor.  The multi-media artist and personality takes pride in expressing himself artistically from a raw and unfettered perspective.

DJ Muggs is a West Coast legend. He is the Creator and Producer of Cypress Hill, the Producer of House Of Pain’s “Jump Around”, Ice Cube’s “Check Yourself”, as well as tracks with MF Doom, Westside Gunn, Action Bronson, Conway The Machine and many, many more, and the multiple time Grammy award nominee is more active than ever.  In the last few years alone he has released projects with Mach-Hommy, Roc Marciano, Yelawolf, Rome Streetz and Jay Worthy; and he’s currently put the finishing touches on the forthcoming Soul Assassins 4 album.

Madlib has become one of the most celebrated, prolific, and eclectic artists in hip-hop since emerging on the scene in the early 90’s.  The unique sound and feel of Madlib’s work has made him a valued collaborator with a number of leading performers, and a widely praised figure in the rap community.  Madlib has already released Liberation 2 with Talib Kweli and In The Beginning, Vol 3 with Declaime this calendar year.

The trio’s recently released collaborative project, Champagne For Breakfast, is jointly produced by Madlib & DJ Muggs and features appearances from Action Bronson and Hologram.  Now, they return with a new visual for “African Pompano.”

Meyhem Lauren x Madlib & DJ Muggs Champagne For Breakfast is now available via Soul Assassin Records.

Queens get the money…

Queens representative and Lo Lifes pioneer Meyhem Lauren is the voice of Fox Sports’ FIFA World Cup coverage.

Even though he is known for the most rugged and raw rhymes alongside his common cohort and Outdoorsmen co-d Action Bronson, the Fly International Luxurious Art lyricist toned down his opulence to lend his larynx to Fox Sports as the voice for the excitement surrounding the international soccer games.

From the beginning of the highly anticipated tournament to currently in the semi-final stages, Meyhem’s voice can be heard exclusively on Fox Sports as the voice of the 2018 World Cup. When asked how he landed the gig, Lauren says, “Basically, I got the job out of nowhere. I’d like to thank good energy to keep it 100.”

Meyhem is currently working on a yet to be titled project with the legendary DJ Muggs as well as the new season of Fuck That’s Delicious with Action Bronson on Viceland, which premieres tonight.

Hip-hop and fashion have always had a hand-in-hand relationship.

Back in 1986, Run DMC pledged their allegiance to Adidas not only through song, but by declaration.  During a performance at the historic Madison Square Garden in New York, the Hollis duo were set to perform “My Adidas,” when group leader Run (now Rev. Run) asked the concert revelers to take their Adidas sneakers (shell toes probably) off and put them in the air. This request proved to be not only iconic, but lucrative for the rap legends. It further set the stage for artists in fashion, as more than consumers.  Fast forward over 30 years later,  you have Kanye West making history at the same MSG by deciding to live stream his latest Yeezy collection fashion show from a runway nestled in one of their main stages.

Fashion can almost be there 5th element of Hip-Hop. Way before rappers got paid to rock clothes or to make clothes, people embraced looking fly because that’s what it “was.” Take Brooklyn’s Lo-Life crew. Getting fly is their M.O. rap career or not. And what brand has for years been their “go to”? Ralph Lauren, Polo.

Amidst the dark and foggy New York nightlife of the 80’s often filled with drug dealers, prostitutes, pimps, stick up kids, addicts and con men was a crew of kids primarily from Brownsville (U.S.A. – United Shoplifters Association) and Crown Heights (Ralphie’s Kids) that adopted a uniform head to toe of Ralph Lauren. Tales of the crew, sometimes 30-40 deep, walking into a Ralph Lauren store and taking what they want then walking out became legendary and the posse earned a serious reputation in a short amount of time. They made such an impression and became such a talking point that they started influencing established rappers and slowly more and more MC’s and DJ’s began mimicking the style.

“When I first got my first cheque I just went to Polo and just went ballistic” – A$AP Ferg

As the lines began to blur over who was and wasn’t an official member, several guys in the crew began to pursue the same music that they had helped stylize. The Lo-Life influence can be seen on the likes of Sean Price, DJ Clark Kent, Kanye West, Raekwon (“Same damn Lo sweater”), Just Blaze and hip-hop media personality Dallas Penn just to name a few. In fact if your memory is intact you will remember that Fabolous was originally called Fabolous Sport, a moniker paying homage to Polo Sport. After getting recognized as The Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype”, Thirstin Howl III aka the Polo Rican, who is infamous for wearing a Polo robe and slippers while doing a bid in prison, has gone on to drop 11 albums in a mixture of English and Spanish and worked with artists such as Eminem, Ol Dirty Bastard, Immortal Technique and Kool Keith. He’s also the main focal point of a new photography book called Bury Me With The Lo On shot by Tom Gould that explores the Lo-Life culture and movement.

Vice TV personality and frequent Action Bronson collaborator Meyhem Lauren isn’t shy about his Lo-Life affiliation on the track “Secret Angle” as he boasts the lyrics,

“Fine fabric delegate with a sneaker fetish/ stackin’ blood money, call it red leaf lettuce/ Polo kingpin, chief brethren, street legend”.

Meyhem has been catching attention with his work alongside DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and Diggin’ In The Crates producer Buckwild as well as his bodying of various guest verses over the last few years. Spit Gemz is another name making noise with his articulate style of philosophical yet hardbody hip-hop who can be heard on tracks next to MC’s Tragedy Khadafi, Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks, Chino XL, Kool G Rap and Blaq Poet, went in on his 2015 appearance on Sway In The Morning earning his spot as one of the undergrounds most talked about. Another stand out MC from this pocket of hip-hop is a young deep voiced wordsmith named Starker who is best known for his Juju (of The Beatnuts fame) produced street banger “Starker X Juju”. You may remember The Source article on his 2015 release The Dutch Masterpiece well, he’s been busy since then with the Lo.Ceasar EP – a collaboration with YL and his latest offering The Bootleg Collection. Starker’s music is unapologetically New York and follows a sound path laid down by pioneers like Mobb Deep, Nas, Cormega, AZ etc. with smooth flows laced with authentic street references that will take several plays through to completely digest.

Over 30 years deep and New York’s Lo-Life’s are just as active and influential in hip-hop than ever before as proven by the re-release of the infamous “Snow Beach” pullover that Raekwon wore in the timeless “Can It Be All So Simple” video clip as well as the Lo-Life staple ‘92 Stadium Series’ which caused chaos amongst streetwear aficionados upon its drop with Supreme and Jordan-esque lineups and campouts to cop it. Although the company has never formally thanked Thirstin, the Lo-Life’s or hip-hop in general for all the heavy lifting on the marketing front, the re-release of these two lines certainly means that they have their ear to the street. Polo, a brand that is conventionally seen as upper-class colonizer attire and hip-hop, straight from the crack era – together they remain as the original rap odd couple that organically works. A lot of rappers can wear Polo, but only a select few can be Lo-Lifes.

Zip up your Ralph Lauren ‘Stadium’ jacket, break out your dead stock cement Jordan 3’s, serve yourself some exotic dipping sauce for your shellfish and pop your finest bottle of Champagne. Queens’ Meyhem Lauren has blessed us with another jewel celebrating luxury, releasing his Glass EP last Friday produced by Brooklyn’s Harry Fraud.

The Lo Life MC is as prolific with his music output as he is with his garment game as this EP drops less than 6 months after his collaboration record with Soul Assassins and Cypress Hill producer DJ Muggs, Gems From The Equinox. This time the production is handled by Harry Fraud, best known for his work with Smoke DZA & Action Bronson. The French Montanadiscovered producer has a unique style of meshing soulful and classy sounding string and horn samples with grimy breakbeats and dusty drum hits that match Meyhem’s lyrical style to a tee – sophisticated yet street. The verses throughout the project are not just a celebration of the finer things in life but also one of making it through the journey acquiring them.

The vocals are littered with references to fine clothing and fine cuisine with fine women feeling like an after party of sorts for a past filled with tales of crime, violence, and graffiti. While some may get lost in the maze of slang and the attention to detail in Meyhem’s descriptive style – it seems to be a refreshing outfit of layers, each one being removed upon a new listen.

Joined by the usual suspects Action Bronson, Big Body Bes & Hologram there are also feature verses from Shady Records/Griselda Records very own Westside Gunn & Conway who can do no wrong at the minute. The project is nine new tracks of no-filler street rap that will have you restocking your wardrobe and your wine rack just to keep up.

Stream Glass on Spotify and Apple.

If you’re going to be in Massachusetts on May 2nd you can catch Lauren rocking the Middle East club alongside DJ Muggs and on May 3rd fans can catch Muggs & Meyhem at the Highline Ballroom in New York City with Roc Marciano.

Instead, you might get the hammer. Track 12 off of the collaborative album between Queens’ Meyhem Lauren and Bronx’s Buckwild gets a clean visual, to keep you focused on the assets beats and rhymes. The Great Outdoors emcee has consistently held it down for NY Rap, and his last project continues that trend. It’s luxurious in all the right ways.

As for the intro of this video: I also hate it when I can’t find a small table in my whole mansion to eat a bowl of cereal off of. Meyhem probably knows my struggle, hence the assistance of his beautiful lady friend. Well, at least that’s the life you live when you rock silk shirts and yellow gold on the regular.

And with a lineup like Meyhem, Bam Bam, Señor, and Rasheed, J57 took the beat in the appropriate direction. All I could do was head nod and think how cold the song is now. The new funky baseline adds a pep in the step to make me picture the streets of NYC on a cold, wintry night. So cool off this summer with a Capri Sun (now in non 5 year old size) and this new remix from J57.

In fact, earlier, the Queensbred MC hit Statik Selektah’s Showoff Radio on Shade 45, where he jumped on the mic and shut sh-t down during a freestyle, slaying his verse with vivid imagery and that “cashmere crushed linen rap.”

Once again, Drake is all up in the headlines like TV’s in Ma$e’s headrests. This time it’s his attempt to air his grievances with a certain publication. And this time, I’m not too mad at him. Okay, maybe he rashly expressed that he was partly upset due to losing the cover to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but who hasn’t said something that they regret in a whirl of frustration? He’s a man nonetheless who’s entitled to his opinions, and if you don’t agree you can take that up with him on Twitter. If you attack him for it, then you’re so far wrong. Too often, we hold celebrities on a 10 story pedestal and severely scold them for slipping time to time. Enough of Aubrey though. Here’s this week’s batch of fresh music to take your mind off of Drake, work, any amount of snow you’ve received, and too much heat you’ve “suffered” from for those in the warmer states. Although it came a few months late, Swisher gives us a celebration song of his 21st birthday as well as a big shout out to everyone else who’s reached the landmark, especially those from his Detroit hometown. And yes, it’s a freestyle over Dom Kennedy’s “Erica Pt. 2″ but it’s essentially a new song.

Meyhem Lauren – “Egyptian Musk”

New Meyhem is part of every balanced diet in the real world-“live by the sword/get sliced by the stiletto.” This single comes off of his collaborative EP with J Love called Digital Camo. And about that next Outdoorsmen project…

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/134237346″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Wally Left – “Lovers & Homies/Hypnotize”

Today we get a 2 for 1 package from Wally over some Chuck Inglish production. The first deals with a love interest turned friend zoned misfortune and the second is possibly his adventures with his next girl. Wally’s cool pervades this one. His EP comes 2/17.

ZMoney – “I Can’t Stop” (Prod. by Odd Couple)

The Chicago rapper and restaurant owner (you read that right) was invited back to Closed Sessions’ studio to record this track that sounds like what street dreams are made of. This reminds me of Gucci when I liked his music for a very short period of time.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/134054571″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Devine Carama (feat. Talor Hall) – “Twinkle Twinkle WorldSTAR” (Prod. by Sir Flywalker)

The latest installment of #MusicMondays deals with the ever controversial Worldstar website. Some see it as the most convenient form of entertainment while others see it as the ultimate invasion of privacy. And others use it as a shortcut to fame, for the wrong reasons.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/133969002″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Relly Snow (feat. Ken Rebel) – “Cosela”

The New York emcee has had some issues with the women in his life. Then again, who hasn’t? For the same token, what girl hasn’t had issues with guys?

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/133908710″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

GrandeMarshall – “Open”

As you can tell, a lot of rappers have been releasing music this week regarding their run ins with certain women. This one details Grande’s slow stepping with this one girl since his distrust grew out of the birth of the selfie. Trill. Produced by GrandeMarshall himself.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/134618680″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Barney Bones – “Crash N Burn”

South Central’s emcee is here to forewarn those on the fast track to riches. Understand that money brings out who you are. It doesn’t necessarily change you.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/133416728″ params=”color=ff0000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Lil Herb – “Koolin'” (Prod. by J-BLOCKMUSIC)

G Herbo lets off a round of the grim truth in the streets on this single off his upcoming Welcome To Fazoland. This is something the mighty 300 would’ve fought to.

fatsWork so hard in the studio/sleep in the studio/#VampireLife…

Here’s another late night edition of #NSBAT because Hip-Hop don’t sleep! And the cliche example of rap that I used for the above quote is not a shot at Jim Jones or his clique, but rather at rappers boasting of “living” in the studio on social media. You should be working tirelessly to perfect your craft and not brag about it. Your work will speak for itself, guys.

Scram Jones – “Wild Style”

If you weren’t aware, this past week was the 30th Anniversary of Wild Style. Please watch it if you haven’t and make all your friends, family, and co-workers do the same. It’s an important piece of history not just to New York City, but to the art world. Scram Jones did his part in observing the anniversary with a track his produced, scratched, and rapped over. It will be on his upcoming Dead Giveway EP.

Drinks up! This is for those long nights in Paris because that’s where you summer house is, right?

PIVOT – “Take 1”

Produced by Saba, take “Take 1” as an introduction to the Pivot Gang from Chicago. This one features MFnMelo, John Walt, and Saba on the mic and will land on their JIMMY project in September.

Ju Malone – “Let Me Go”

The muffled beat provided by Malone himself is perfect to lose yourself in after working a double shift.

FowL – “Unfold”

Tycoon Beats lays down a beat that has come to be described as very Detroit by me, after years of listening to Slum Village. And FowL is on his way to being in that conversation with Slum.

Dally Auston – “Through The Wire”

No, it’s not a freestyle over Kanye’s track. Instead, it’s an original verse over a beat from OnGaud describing the thoughts of a young artist.

This single can be copped on vinyl alone or together with his Mandatory Brunch Meetings package. The ill piano riff along with the Rotten Apple war stories are more than enough to lure you in to this NYC favorite.
