Born and raised in Queens, NY, Meyhem Lauren has long been one of the culture’s most reliable brands; built from quality, consistency, and flavor.  The multi-media artist and personality takes pride in expressing himself artistically from a raw and unfettered perspective.

DJ Muggs is a West Coast legend. He is the Creator and Producer of Cypress Hill, the Producer of House Of Pain’s “Jump Around”, Ice Cube’s “Check Yourself”, as well as tracks with MF Doom, Westside Gunn, Action Bronson, Conway The Machine and many, many more, and the multiple time Grammy award nominee is more active than ever.  In the last few years alone he has released projects with Mach-Hommy, Roc Marciano, Yelawolf, Rome Streetz and Jay Worthy; and he’s currently put the finishing touches on the forthcoming Soul Assassins 4 album.

Madlib has become one of the most celebrated, prolific, and eclectic artists in hip-hop since emerging on the scene in the early 90’s.  The unique sound and feel of Madlib’s work has made him a valued collaborator with a number of leading performers, and a widely praised figure in the rap community.  Madlib has already released Liberation 2 with Talib Kweli and In The Beginning, Vol 3 with Declaime this calendar year.

The trio’s recently released collaborative project, Champagne For Breakfast, is jointly produced by Madlib & DJ Muggs and features appearances from Action Bronson and Hologram.  Now, they return with a new visual for “African Pompano.”

Meyhem Lauren x Madlib & DJ Muggs Champagne For Breakfast is now available via Soul Assassin Records.

Kendrick Lamar to Make First Album Appearance of 2020 On Busta Rhymes 'ELE2'

Madlib is one of the greatest and most experimental producers of all time. From having collaborated with artists such as Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, the late and great MF Doom, and in more recent years, Freddie Gibbs, there aren’t very many artists who haven’t collaborated with Madlib. There is one rapper, however, that Madlib tried to get in touch with, but couldn’t connect with.

That rapper is Kendrick Lamar.

In a new interview with The Guardian for his latest project, Sound Ancestors, the producer extraordinaire said that he missed the phone call to collab with the Compton-bred MC for his To Pimp A Butterfly album and that he’s a hard man to get a hold of.

“Back then I was more elusive than I am now,” he told the outlet. “I was busy on my own thing. Missed opportunities, man.”

He added that working with Lamar “probably wouldn’t have worked out anyway”, he says, “cos I’m like a sore thumb.” He says he’s never properly worked with any artist. Even with his 2019 collab album Bandana with Freddie Gibbs, he and Gibbs never met up to work on music. Instead, the two “just exchanged ideas.”

Later in the interview, Madlib said that he thinks more music right now should be like Public Enemy, probably due to the tense political climate in the United States right now and a lot of the music not reflecting the times.

“Rap music right now should be like Public Enemy stuff, but it’s just not there,” he says. “I wish it was more like how it was in the earlier days when I was coming up. My influences. Real music. Music can teach you … things not to do. Most of the music today is telling you bad things to do. My type of hip-hop can help you grow up.”

Petition Pushes To Name New York Street After MF DOOM

Peanut Butter Wolf, the founder of Stones Throw Records, revealed that the sequel to the classic MF Doom and Madlib album, Madvillany, is “85 percent done” and could be released sometime in the very near future.

Peanut Butter Wolf made an appearance on Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds’ Juan Ep is Dead podcast, where he made the announcement about the project.

Madvillain 2, DOOM was always telling me, ‘Oh, I’m 85 percent done’ — that was always the magic number, and I was like, ‘This is cool,’” he said. “He basically sent us 11 tracks in 2009 and I was ready to try to just finish it up at that point, and it was always like, just wait for a few more songs, wait for a few more songs, then tracks would start being on other albums. I got a little frustrated, and I was just like, ‘Well, it’s gonna happen when it happens. I don’t wanna be the guy to force creativity or any of that.’

Peanut Butter Wolf said that he also has 11 tracks that he has Dooms permission to release following his death last year. However, he doesn’t want to release the tracks just yet as he doesn’t want to capitalize off of the grief surrounding Doom’s death.

Late Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller reportedly recorded an entire album with famed producer Madlib before his untimely passing last year.

Maclib, the reported name of the joint project, was created by the Cali-based producer and Miller sometime in 2018 and Thelonious Martin says that there is plenty of unreleased Mac Miller the fans would like to hear.

In an exclusive interview with DJ Booth, Martin says Miller was already excited about the joint project.

“When we was [sic] working on [2018 collaboration] ‘Guidelines’, he was always excited about all these other songs,” Martin recalled about Miller. “He had this Madlib album, called ‘Maclib’.

“I opened for Madlib in Chicago last summer, at Pitchfork [Festival],” Martin continued. “So I’m opening for Madlib, and about 15, 20 minutes left in my set, Madlib pulls up. Pete Rock walks up as well. So I’m trying to focus and DJ, and Madlib gets on and 15 minutes into his set he just randomly plays a Mac Miller joint.”

“And I turn to him, I’m like, ‘There’s more of these, right?’ He’s said, ‘Oh, yeah, there’s a whole album. ‘Maclib’.’ What! What! He just kept moving on with his DJ set.”

J Dilla

The works of renowned hip-hop producer J Dilla or Jay Dee is one throws listeners into calm chills. Today (Feb. 7) the late producer would have turned 44 years old.

Dilla has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the 90s due to his ability to craft a signature approach for hip-hop measures. It is a given destiny being his mother Maureen Yancey a.k.a. Ma Dukes was formerly an opera singer and his father Beverly Dewitt Yancey was an instrumentalist, specializing as a jazz bassist.

A Detroit native Jay Dee became a district phenomenon with the formation of Slum Village, a trio collective featuring himself, Baatin-who died in 2009 and T3. Their debut album Fantastic (Vol. 1) heralded the ideal Detroit vibe with the display of Jay Dee’s mastery of blending samples embedded in jazz and soul hymns. The success of Fantastic lead to Dilla becoming a staple for production in the hip-hop circuit, eventually attracting acts in the likes of Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, Common, Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes and countless more. He even crossed forces with A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad and developed the production collective The Ummah whose focal point was to strategically craft glossy and cherrystone melodies for both hip-hop and r&b artists.

In early 2003, Dilla’s health began to deteriorate as he was diagnosed with a rare blood condition, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), which caused significant weight loss and strict use of medications. Dilla continued to work diligently, even teaming up with LA producer Madlib for the notable Jaylib LP. A year later, Jay Dee’s health worsened as he was diagnosed with Lupus, causing his travels and performing times to become limited. The condition led to several accounts of kidney failure and constant dialysis treatments, but Yancey continued to indulge in his passion as a producer. He went on to produce tracks for Common’s Be album.

Sadly, on February 10th, 2006, just three days after his birthday and the release of his third solo album, cult class Donuts, J Dilla passed away at the tender age of 32.

J Dilla is celebrated for his elite skill set behind blending samples and he was instrumentally active in reviving the jazz and rhythm and blues sound back to the limelight of hip-hop music. He develop a signature sound that became a branded demand by several hip-hop acts. Hip-hop culture has expressed high appreciation for the time, love and energy J Dilla dedicated towards the sound of Hip-Hop Culture.

Producing is a hallowed art form. The beat is Hip Hop’s life and soul, serving as a catalyst allowing an MC to reach the hearts and minds of their supporters. The yin to an MC’s lyrical yang, production is equally as important to rap as the rapper, although rarely recognized as such. On this day in Hip Hop history we celebrate the birth of a man who lived and breathed Hip Hop. Today in 1973, Otis Jackson Jr drew his first breath and Madlib was born.

Hailing from Oxnard, California, Madlib was born into a musical family. Both his parents, Otis Jackson Sr. and Dora Sinesca Faddis-Jackson have both seen success as recording artists, his uncle, Jon Faddis, is a famed jazz trumpet player, and his younger brother, Michael Jackson, is rapper Oh No.

As a producer, Madlib has had his hand in some of Hip Hop’s most critically acclaimed projects. His vast discography contains rap classics as well as volumes of beat left to stand alone as instrumental masterpieces. Over his 23 years in the game, Madlib has shaken things up by taking on a few different alter egos, all specializing in a different sound.  In honor of his birthday, we have put together a meet & greet of sorts to introduce to those who don’t know to the many face that make up Madlib.

Lootpack

In 1992, Madlib, Wildchild, and DJ Romes came together to create underground Hip Hop group Lootpack. The trio released their first project, Ill Psyche Move EP, in 1996 under Otis Jackson Sr.’s record label Crate Digga’s Paradise. They quickly caught the attention of Stones Throw founder, Peanut Butter Wolf, who eventually talked the trio to signing with his label. The group went on to release two complete albums, Soundpieces: Da Antidote in 1999 and The Lost Tapes in 2004 and an array of singles and EPs.

Beat Konducta

As undoubtedly his most used alias, Madlib has released literally volumes of beats under this pseudonym. His popular album series, Beat Konducta is a 7-album-and-counting collection of instrumentals that have been rapped on as well as exclusives. Beginning in 2001 with Vol. 0 Earth Sounds, this series has produced some of Madlib’s highest selling solo work.

DJ Rels

In 2004, Madlib stretched his wings and ventured into the realm of electronic music releasing Theme for a Broken Soul under the name DJ Rels. The project received mixed reviews from critics, some praising while calling the album monotonous and unimaginative. Nevertheless, this album was a large step out of Madlib’s comfort zone and should be celebrated as such.

Jaylib

The duo of Madlib and J Dilla is so prolific it’s almost unreal. The two teamed up in the early 2000’s to release one of Hip Hop’s greatest albums of the new millennium, Champion Sound, in 2003. With the two switching off between rapping and producing every other track, this album shows the growth of both artists as rapper/producers. This album was Madlib’s first duo collaboration, and was far from his last.

Madvillian

One year after the release of Champion Sound, Madlib this time teamed up with newest Stones Throw signee, MF DOOM. The two came together to release what has been hailed as one of the greatest collaborative albums of time, Madvillainy.  Although the album only peaked at #179 on the Billboard 200, Hip Hop heads hold this project in very high regard. Following their debut, the duo went on to continuous drop bombs with surprise singles, the latest being “Avalanche & Victory Lap”. Both parties have sad that the world should also be on the look out for a second Madvillainy album to come out “as soon as DOOM finishes it” according to Madlib.

Yesterdays New Quintet

In 2001, Madlib took a break from Hip Hop production and began a Jazz based electronic quintet consisting of musicians played by known other than Madlib. Over the next few years, the quintet released a multitude of albums and continued to add more fictional component to the band. The amount of player became so vast that the band became known as Yesterday’s Universe. As time went on, a spin off group, Sound Direction, was created incorporating more musicians who this time did not come from the mind of Madlib.

Jackson Conti

Consisting of Madlib and drummer of Brazilian funk band Azymuth, Ivan Conti, Jackson Conti is a Latin Jazz/Brazilian Samba fusion band. In 2008, the duo released their sole album, Sujinho. The album was released twice, once in the Netherlands on a double LP and later in the United States. It is one of Madlib’s more rare collaborations, being that he went under his government name in it’s credits.

Quasimoto

Last but not least is the cartoon, high pitched, MC alter ego, Quasimoto. First stepping on the scene in 1998 on Peanut Butter Wolf’s My Vinyl Weighs a Ton. A debut album was released in 2000 titled, The Unseen, which received praised in both the underground and mainstream. Lord Quas released two more album, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas and Yessir Whatever, which both have only more solidified Quasimoto’s place in Hip Hop history, independent of Madlib’s legacy. There is no word whetehr or not another Quas album will see the light of day so the public will just have to wait and see what Madlib has up his sleeve.

Madlib’s career is one of the most unique in Hip Hop, his boundless ability to create and collaborate has given us some of the most eclectic rap music in existence. Very rarely does an artist come around with the fortitude to produce as much work as Madlib. Hip Hop as a whole is forever in his debt for the hours of entertainment he has provided and his innovation he has brought to the genre. On behalf of everyone here at The Source Magazine and TheSource.com, Happy Bornday Madlib, may you continue to have a prosperous career and give the world volumes more of your heart and soul.

Red Bull held its 2016 Music Festival in New York City and it brought out some of the greats in music.

Part of the festival included the Red Bull Academy’s “Joint Lectures on the Couch” series, which kicked off with a rare interview with Madlib, then shifted gears and chopped it up with ATL favorite sons Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital and Zaytoven for a special beat makers round-table discussion (see our review here).

In the interview with Jeff Mao, Madlib drops compelling answers and opened up about a number of topics—including the musical influence of his father, R&B singer Otis Jackson.

“My pops had me at the studio since I was born,” he said. “That’s why I got into music. He’d let me go up on the controls and mess with stuff. Engineers would get mad, but he’d be like, ‘Let the brother do this.’ That’s how I learned.”

Lib also confessed that he’s “creating music constantly” both at home and in the studio and he opened up about several of those projects – including his collaborations with MF Doom, Freddie Gibbs and J Dilla.

“He’s a fellow alien,” he said of the late Dilla. “It’s hard to explain. Musical cousin. He was the king, though.”

Sitting down with music critic Andrew “Noz” Nosnitsky, the Atlanta trio discussed their influences, breakout hits, the rise of trap and the producer drop, their approach to sampling and collaborations, among other things.

Zaytoven spoke on why “So Icy” is his favorite record out of all of his hits and explained how he linked up with Gucci Mane for the trap classic.

“That’s the song that got me in the game, so I’m always going to be proud of that,” Zaytoven said. “If you listen to the song it didn’t sound like something that would come out of Atlanta, it sounded like something that came out of the West Coast and that came from Gucci trusting me and looking at me like I could do no wrong.”

Sonny Digital talked about how he discovered music and breaking into the industry.

“I started when I was young”, Sonny said. “It was never like a job to me, it was something that I loved to do as a hobby. I remember I had a MPC, I don’t remember how it got there or the first beat, but I remember I would make beats and then go play because I just did it for fun and then it came back around for me later [in life].

Sonny also talks about working with YC and Future for the smash “Racks” and why he feels it was a blessing and a curse.

“When I first did it, I didn’t tag it,” Sonny continued, “I had the tags but I didn’t use it and it almost f*cked me, that’s why I say that song is a blessing and a curse because it ushered in so much new talent with me, YC and Future as well.”

Metro Boomin discussed how Morehouse College played a big role in his breakout song with Future, “Karate Chop.”

“Going to Morehouse was huge and actually I got the idea for the song in class,” Metro said. “I used to make beats in my dorms on the low, but once I started to blow people in class seen me less and less [chuckles].”

Ma Dukes is the illest—especially if you’re a J Dilla fan. The mother of the late, great rapper has steadily dropped his unreleased material over the past several years, including Dillatronic in October.

The latest leaked posthumous track, “The Look,” comes from the upcoming re-release of Jay Love Japan, one of many since his 2006 passing. On April 15, another highly-anticipated J Dilla album, The Diary, hits the shelves—a project originally slated to drop in 2002.

The Diary features vocals from Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Nottz, Kokaine, and J Dilla himself. It also gets some production assistance from Hi-Tek, Pete Rock, Madlib, and more. The release is a joint effort with Mass Appeal Records, Nas‘ record label.

The re-release of Jay Love Japan is a much needed reboot of the initial project, which saw a short release in 2008. Japan was reportedly one of Dilla’s favorite tour spots. The aptly-named album is expected to surface around Mother’s Day.

On this day in Hip Hop history, the infamous duo of the super villain MF DOOM and Hip Hop super producer Madlib joined forces to release their first collaborative project, Madvillainy. As a tandem, DOOM and Madlib make up the dastardly Madvillain, one of the most prolific two-man crews in rap.

Released on Stones Throw Records, the album was the duo’s debut. Its release shook the Hip Hop world with success among underground and industry listeners alike. Although it may have only hit the #179 spot on the Billboard 200 and #80 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart, the critical reception was nothing but positive. Publications that usually never cover Hip Hop, such as The New Yorker, put out reviews praising the album’s greatness.

There were four videos shot from the album: “All Caps,” “Accordion,” “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Shadow of Tomorrow,” all of which were released after the album had already made a big splash in the music scene.

After Madvillainy, the duo went on to only release one more project, Madvillainy 2 which consisted of remixes to tracks from the original along with a few new cuts for all to enjoy. Take some time out of your day today to listen to some of these legendary Hip Hop cuts. If you truly love Hip Hop, you can’t go wrong with and will never be disappointed by Madvillain.

Last night, during  NasMass Appeal showcase at SXSW, he shared some new music he has with J Dilla produced by Madlib.  The track, “The Sickness” features Jay Dee as well as production from Madlib and Dilla. Next month Mass Appeal is planning to release an album by the legendary Detroit producer J Dilla titled, The Diary. The album will feature never before heard production from Dilla as well as a number of  his vocals lost over time. “The Sickness” will presumably also find its way onto the album. The Diary is said to include contributions from Snoop Dogg, Pete Rock, Bilal and more and will be released by Mass Appeal Records on April 15. Although the sound quality isn’t the best, it isn’t hard to hear the musical genius behind the track.

Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar Have Collaborated Again https://thesource.com/2016/01/22/kanye-west-and-kendrick-lamar-have-collaborated-again/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kanye-west-and-kendrick-lamar-have-collaborated-again Fri, 22 Jan 2016 16:26:40 +0000 http://thesource.com/?p=321685 kanye west kendrick lamar

It appears another Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar collaboration is on its way. Just days after the completed version of “No More Parties in L.A.” – which, as it turns out, samples Drake‘s uncle, Larry Graham – was released, Yeezy has shared a photo of the pair back in the studio together. “We just wanna thank Madlib for these six beat CDs he sent over,” Kanye tweeted.

But Madlib, who produced the aforementioned record – a beat originally intended for Kanye’s 2010 LP, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – wasn’t the only producer in last night’s session, as Swizz Beatz was also pictured, at the very least providing vocals.

Yeezy even shared a photo of an E-mu SP-1200 drum machine, much to the delight of many hip-hop heads. Back in 2002, it’s worth noting, he shared an interesting story with Complex about how he traded No I.D. his chain for that very same piece of equipment – or certainly the exact model.

Depending perhaps on whether or not Kanye has already submitted his seventh solo album, SWISH, well in advance of its projected February 11 release, it would seem as though last night’s session may result in yet another G.O.O.D. Friday – or Saturday, or Sunday, or Monday – freebie.

Yeezy season is approaching upon us.

Kanye West has dominated news headlines during the first week of the new year, dropping a Nike diss track, “Facts,” late on New Year’s Eve, and being confirmed as the headliner for New York City’s Governors Ball this June. In addition to that, this morning, Kim Kardashian announced that new music would be releasing today, and hinted at Ye’s weekly new-music-on-Friday series returning, with the hashtag #EveryFriday.

Now this week’s new music is here, and as Kardashian alluded, the song is called “Real Friends,” and features Ty Dolla $ign. If you remember, last year, Ty Dolla $ign reported last year via an interview with Billboard that Kanye flew him out to Mexico to work on several collaborations, including songs with Paul McCartney and Rihanna. During the preview of Kanye’s Yeezy Season 2 collection during NYFW last year, a song called “Fade,” featuring Ty Dolla and Post Malone was premiered, and $ign was featuring in the background vocals of “Only One,” the Paul McCartney collaboration Kanye dropped on New Year’s Eve in 2014.

At the tail end of “Real Friends,” you can also hear a snippet of what will likely be the next release in the #EveryFriday series, “No More Parties In LA,” featuring Kendrick Lamar and production from Madlib.

Kanye has updated his official Soundcloud account with the official “Real Friends” and “No More Parties In LA” snippet, and you can listen to them here.
